Under supervision of the Water Production Department Manager, provides potable water in sufficient amounts to meet the needs of the public. Provide citizens with the best customer service possible, demonstrating concern for request for service or assistance.
Examples of Duties
: Assists the Manager in all facets of the Water Production Department operations; Assumes Managers role in the absence of the Manager. Briefs Supervisor of employee status, work schedules, and any specific jobs in progress. Actively participates and offers input for planning and implementing of capital projects, planning and implementing operational strategies, and the general management of staff including hiring, training, developing SOPs, discipline, etc. Prepares and submits various reports to Supervisor as needed or requested; directs and assists in the daily activities of the department, including operations and maintenance. Primary person responsible for managing water sampling of the distribution system and water storage tanks. Work well with the public and co-workers; communicates effectively and courteously in person, in writing, by telephone, by radio and via E mail. Attends meetings such as divisional, safety and training sessions to maintain current knowledge of the water industry. Follows a chain of command, receptive to instruction and directions. Assists in reviewing the work of employees and contractors performing work for the department. Operates pumping facilities, computer, fax machine, telephones, copier and other equipment as necessary. This position is subject to call-outs during emergencies, responds when contacted; must carry phone at all times. Routinely lifts or moves up to 50 pounds, occasionally assists in lifting or moving up to 100 pounds, rolling chlorine cylinders up to 300 pounds, moving by chain hoist 1 ton chlorine cylinders; uses ladders, power tools, air compressor, pumps, air blowers, portable generator, hand tools and wrenches, SCBA air packs and other safety equipment; sits, stands, bends, twists, stoops, kneels and drives while performing daily duties. Follows established safety procedures and practices. Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
: Necessary skills/abilities: Good customer service skills; Mechanical aptitude; considerable knowledge of Water Production operations; considerable knowledge of industry standards, practices, procedures, methods, materials, equipment and relevant city, state and federal rules and regulations; ability to lead personnel to achieve goals.
Preferred Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of SCADA operating system; knowledge of building maintenance, including plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs; experience with power saws, drills, grinders, air compressors, chain hoist, pumps, air blowers, portable generators, hand tools and wrenches; computer knowledge and experience.Education and Experience
: High School diploma or GED. Class C Groundwater Certification issued by the state of Texas. The Lead Operator will be strongly encouraged to acquire advanced licensing. Must have a valid Texas drivers license with an acceptable driving record. Three years of progressively responsible experience in Water Production utilities operations and maintenance. Class C CDL with Hazmat endorsement must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
