  Description of Work Unit

  The Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President at Colorado State University seeks a strategic, creative academic leader, a champion of undergraduate student success, to serve as the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs.   The Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President upholds CSU’s commitment to the sciences and the liberal and performing arts, strong professional schools, research and education excellence, and a collaborative institutional culture. All the university’s academic colleges report to the Provost, as do the Libraries, the Vice President for Students Affairs, the Vice President for Research, the Office of International Affairs, and the Graduate School.   Position Summary

  The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs ( VPUA ) is a key member of the Provost’s leadership team, with the primary responsibilities of providing academic, strategic, and operational leadership for all initiatives supporting undergraduate education and campus-wide student success programs. This individual leads the enhancement of academic programs including program review, assessment of student learning, and development of new academic programs. They provide support for campus leadership for reaccreditation. The VPUA assists the Provost in building collaborative networks across the University to support undergraduate student success, degree completion, high-impact practices, and general education throughout the undergraduate experience. The position helps maintain connectivity between the Provost and their many reporting units and individuals, identifies and realizes strategic priorities for the Provost related to undergraduate education, and executes specific strategic and logistical projects that support those strategic priorities. The VPUA leads initiatives to promote equity of opportunity and diversity. They will work with academic units across all disciplines to advance student success and improve student retention and graduation rates.

  This position involves significant independent decision-making and extensive partnering with units and individuals who report to or collaborate closely with the Provost’s Office, including the academic deans and vice presidents from across the university. The VPUA always represents the Office of the Provost in a professional and engaging manner.

  The individual in this position will demonstrate a high level of personal leadership, initiative, and project management expertise to translate ideas and vision into action, making timely, informed decisions to support effective processes, and help the Provost achieve significant gains in productivity and impact. Examples include:

  Implementation of the Academic Master Plan – facilitating new academic programs, curricular innovation, and interdisciplinary initiatives.

  Vision, guidance, and leadership for undergraduate education, advising and experiential learning, and ongoing undergraduate academic support programs.

  Central Architect of a culture of undergraduate persistence and achievement, including determining the best programs and services to support degree completion.

  Innovation in the development of multiple initiatives, with a focus on collaboration, belonging, inclusivity, diversity, and equity with appropriate assessment.

  The VPUA partners with the Provost to lead the Provost’s Office in achieving its strategic vision and goals relative to undergraduate education, including developing and executing the logistical processes that will lead to the achievement of goals in consultation with the Provost but as the primary executor.

  The VPUA is a 12-month full-time position. The VPUA reports directly to Marion K. Underwood, Ph.D., Provost and Executive Vice President and is a member of the Provost and Executive Vice President’s staff and the President’s Executive Leadership Team.

  The VPUA supervises: One Administrative Assistant, the Assistant Vice President for Student Success (dual report to the Vice President for Student Affairs), the Executive Director of University Academic Advising and Outreach, the Director of the University Honors Program, the Professor of Military Science (Army ROTC ), and the Professor of Aerospace Studies (Air Force ROTC ). Serves as the CSU liaison to the Chief Academic Officer for Semester at Sea.

  Required Job Qualifications

  Ph.D. or relevant terminal academic degree from an accredited institution.

  Seven or more years of experience in higher education demonstrating increasing responsibilities.

  Rank of professor (preferred) eligible for tenure in an academic department at CSU . Advanced associate professors may be considered.

  Academic leadership experience at the department and/or college level.

  Demonstrated commitment to participatory management, shared governance, and teamwork.

  Demonstrated commitment to collectively advancing holistic student support and success in partnership with enrollment management, student affairs, and academic units.

  Demonstrated academic leadership and significant experience with undergraduate curriculum, program review, and assessment of student learning, and management of the undergraduate education process.

  Demonstrated success managing complex operational projects and strategic initiatives involving diverse stakeholders.

  Demonstrated experience in and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as a core value in all aspects of undergraduate education and co-curricular activities.

  Demonstrated strong interpersonal and organizational communication skills.

  Ability to exercise sound judgement, tact, discretion, and integrity with sensitive and confidential information.

  Preferred Job Qualifications

  Ten or more years of progressive experience in higher education.

  Rank of full professor.

  Demonstrated capacity for influential leadership.

  Proven track record of innovation, creativity, and best practices, as well as the capacity to lead change.

  Demonstrated ability to problem solve and adapt to rapidly changing situations.

  Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative and transparent manner in partnership with academic and administrative leaders.

  Engagement with and connection to national initiatives and trends related to undergraduate education, student success, high-impact practices, assessment of learning, and curriculum.

  Skill and comfort with data and its use in tracking and communicating success as well as to identify, uncover, and remedy inequitable policies and practices.

  Demonstrated ability to engage and effectively communicate with diverse audiences.

  Familiarity with and commitment to the Land Grant Mission and its purpose.

  Experience related to budget oversight. Experience with strategic and intentional budget management, planning, forecasting, and allocations.

  Experience with and commitment to undergraduate teaching and advising.

  Provide comprehensive executive-level support of a substantial and confidential nature to the Provost, contributing expertise to making informed decisions in a timely manner.

  Develop and assure compliance with policies relevant to undergraduate education. Policies include, but are not limited to, graduation requirements, student academic appeals, differential tuition, and special course fees.

  Oversee the final review of undergraduate student academic appeals after they have been reviewed at the department and college levels.

  Oversee the undergraduate curriculum including reviewing proposals for new degrees and programs of study assuring compliance with university strategic planning and CDHE guidelines.

  Continuous improvement of guidelines and metrics for academic program reviews.

  Work in strong collaboration with the Director of Assessment and the Vice Provost for Planning and Effectiveness to develop strategy for assessment of student learning, including university-level and program-level assessment.

  Work in close partnership with the Vice Provost for Planning and Effectiveness to guide the campus reaccreditation process.

  Provide visionary and creative leadership in the development, review, improvement, and prioritization of student success programs and monitor accountability for success.

  Coordinate oversight for university advising strategy and initiatives.

  Work with the Registrar’s Office to connect Registrar activities to Academic Affairs and serve as a resource.

  Ex officiomember of the University Curriculum Committee.

  Attend the Colorado Commission for Higher Education General Education Council meetings and serve as a liaison on issues related to undergraduate programming and state-wide transfer issues.

  Chair the Special Course Fee Committee, which leads decision-making and auditing efforts.

  Chair the Course Capacity Committee and manage Course Capacity funds.
