Additionally, this position provides for original and complex cataloging according to established library standards and creates authority records as required; provides metadata consultation expertise for projects within the Libraries and across other academic departments; and supports the cataloging work of Libraries' distinct and unique special collections, including supervision of additional Libraries staff. This position also works closely with our digital library services and preservation programs to support access and discoverability of our diverse library and archival collections. Located in the Collections and Content Strategy Service Area, the Cataloging, Metadata and Digitization Services Department provides foundational and innovative metadata and digitization services in support of knowledge resource description and discovery. The department holds principal responsibility for metadata creation, extraction, and import, and its transformation and enrichment, in addition to supporting a large Digital Library Services digitization center. This department carries out these functions through the coalescing of metadata standards and information technology expertise, and in collaboration with numerous Libraries, University, institutional partners, and professional entities. Position Responsibilities Authority and Bibliographic Leadership (30%) Plans, coordinates, and participates in database enrichment and maintenance activities for bibliographic, authority, holdings, and item records; monitor emerging standards to ensure the accuracy and completeness of all records. Creates/updates bibliographic and authority records for the Libraries; performs maintenance or enrichment functions as required. Leads in the design and execution of metadata schema and/or selection of appropriate schema, working closely with project developer teams, and applications' business owners, including our digital library and preservation programs. Provides leadership and coordination on the department's reparative description/enhancement efforts, helping to further advance our work within a DEI framework. Supervision (20%) Responsible for the training, management, supervision, and performance reviews for the Metadata Specialist Supervisor and the work of the Archives and Special Collections cataloging unit. Planning, Policy Development, and Collaboration (20%) Participates in the development, documentation, and evaluation of departmental policies and procedures and serves as a resource and liaison to the University community for metadata best practices. Service to the Libraries, University, and/or the Community (15%) Establishes a record of visible active contribution to the Libraries, the institution, and/or the broader community that extends beyond assigned responsibilities. Contributes to the University of Minnesota's commitment to serve the citizens of Minnesota. Professional Development and Contribution (15%) Contributes to the advancement of librarianship through visible professional activity, particularly as it contributes to the achievement of library and University objectives. Engages in local, regional, and national professional activities that contribute to advancing the theory and practice of librarianship, and of cataloging specifically. Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time, 12-month, continuous-appointment track, academic professional position with probationary appointment at the Assistant Librarian rank. Qualifications Required: American Library Association accredited Master's degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience. One or more years of cataloging and/or authority/bibliographic control experience using MARC formats, AACR 2rev or Original Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library Congress subject headings and classification. Experience using a bibliographic utility such as OCLC Connexion, and a library management system, such as Alma. Demonstrated excellence in communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively both independently and in cooperation with colleagues in a service-oriented, collaborative environment. Preferred: Training in or experience with creating name authority records according to PCC NACO standards. Understanding of and experience with other metadata schema such as Dublin Core, MODS, and METS. Experience cataloging special collections and/or rare materials. Supervisory experience. Ability to work with a variety of foreign languages, including those using non-Roman scripts. Demonstrated involvement in professional activities, including evidence of ability to contribute to librarianship, research, and service.
