The (Fort Myers) News-Press and Naples Daily News are seeking an aggressive, digitally savvy journalist to be our next trending/general assignment reporter who will identify, verify, and curate news of what Southwest Floridians are talking about.
This job requires: Quick, tight, lively writing and a command of grammar and style. Speedy, assertive reporting skills. A competitive mindset determined to see one's work at the top our pageview charts each day. An understanding of social media platforms, audience metrics and SEO techniques. Chasing news, sports, politics, business and entertainment stories, as well as features, about topics already trending online, based on online conversations or with a history of high-audience interest. Two to three short posts most weekdays. This reporter is expected to pitch a handful of high-audience-potential ideas each morning, add smart context, seek out right multimedia and do original reporting to add value to a reader's experience.
The job also requires: Writing inviting headlines and social language to lure the biggest possible audience. Most of these stories will be directed at new and occasional readers to turn them into loyal readers and subscribers. Covering breaking news and producing quick-turn enterprise. Using Google Trends, CrowdTangle, Dataminr and other tools to mine story ideas from social media and news organizations. Seeking compelling photos, video, and graphics. Producing content in alternative forms (listicles, Q&As, narratives, photo galleries, video - that are tailored to the right platform (mobile, desktop, social media) to best reach the target audience. Using real-time metrics to respond to user demand and reader interest. Other requirements: At least two years of journalism or related experience. College experience and internships will be considered. A commitment to the highest ethical journalism standards, including fairness and inclusion.
