This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I for the Williamston Bridge Maintenance Unit located in Martin County. The employee within this position will supervise the activities of a bridge crew in the maintenance, repair and replacement of bridges, culverts and large diameter pipes. Duties include monitoring and review of daily assignments; making adjustments to project plans to meet field conditions; planning, monitoring, and ensuring safety standards are adhered to; documenting inventory and equipment usage, making visual bridge inspections, and responding to public inquiries. The employee will also complete daily reports and logs and maintain records. The employee will be required to develop computer skills. The employee will also be required to work closely with other units/departments to ensure the assigned projects are completed. The employee will supervise a crew to accomplish daily tasks; must have an understanding of erosion control plans, complete minor calculation, understand and follow written/oral instructions, and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used
Experience in planning work and supervising a bridge crew
Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
Experience inspecting bridges for minor maintenance needs
Additional Expectations:
Visual acuity is required. Safety toe footwear is required. Able to communicate effectively with people. Must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions and walk and stand for long periods of time on uneven and sloping terrain. May be required to perform heavy lifting. Ability to supervise work crews. Ability to promote safe work environment. Ability to maintain working knowledge of all operating procedures. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. Ability to perform quantity calculations. This position is subject to emergency callback and may require evening, weekend and/or holiday work. Employee must be able to legally operate a state vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
