  Job Description

  The Department of Youth Services (DYS) is the juvenile justice agency for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We work with youth who are detained and/or committed by the court and provide assessment, mental health services, substance abuse services, educational services, community support and supervision through a continuum of care. Most youth served are between the ages of 14 and 18 but legally may be between the ages of 12 and 21. The Department promotes positive change in the lives of youth in its care, and has been at the forefront of de-institutionalization, in part, by providing adolescent-focused rehabilitation to youth in residential treatment programs.

  The Department of Youth Services employs staff in various professions and backgrounds in order to engage youth in strategies that support Positive Youth Development (PYD). As a key member of the residential team, incumbents of this position monitor and provide on-site and immediate care and services for DYS youth in both hardware secure and staff secure residential programs across the state.

  Under the direction of the Director of Training, the Training Coordinator will plan and coordinate the development and administration of training programs for DYS; Deliver training to support the agency's Basic Training curriculum for new employees; Coordinate and conduct Annual Review Trainings for veteran staff; and Assist in the operation of the Agency's Training Center including scheduling of training activities and monitoring of building use.

  Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  Deliver training services as needed and directed at the various agency locations statewide.Meet with Training Academy team and Regional Training Coordinators to discuss training and development goals to ensure effectiveness of curriculum and consistency with delivery such curriculum as outlined in the facilitator manual or lesson plan.Facilitate trainings discussions regarding self- identification of our youth to determine better ways to understand them, support them and to create safer places for both youth and employees. Training topics include Diversity, LGBTQI and Gender Non-Conforming Youth the Reduction of Racial and Ethnic Disparities.Manage classrooms attendance, participation, training materials, set/up & breakdowns.Work with the entire Training team on curriculum development and review, communication of trainings, posting of information in PACE (Learning Management System); post-training write-ups; and submit requests for purchase for materials if necessary. Review Agency reports as needed.Coordinate and facilitate supplemental professional development courses for modules, as designated by Training Director.Supervise the development of adjunct trainers, including coach, support and monitor to ensure consistent with DYS curriculum, practices and policies. Support adjunct/guest instructors with classroom management, attendance, participation, training materials, set/up & breakdowns or issues they identify.Assist with managing the process of issuing DYS ID cards.Notify Director of Training and /or Regional Training Coordinators of any pertinent issues/problems/concerns in a timely way.Performs related work as required.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  Applicants must have strong communication and presentation skills. Ability to work in a group situation, to work in a team setting, to facilitate groups, to exercise sound judgment, maintain accurate records and establish rapport with others. Applicants should have strong computer skills and familiarity with various software applications such as Microsoft Office, Access, PowerPoint, Excel, and be willing to learn new applications used by DYS such as PACE and Captivate.Two years of full or part time training experience or a current teaching certificate. Three to five years' experience in juvenile residential or community settings. Knowledge of the basic theories and principles of learning and motivation as applied to employee training. Knowledge of training methods and techniques such as on-the-job training, lecture, workshop, conference, case study, role playing, programmed instruction, demonstration, simulation and games. Knowledge of program evaluation methods. Knowledge of the principles and practices of curriculum development.CPR/First Aid/AED certification and current on all state and DYS mandated trainings.

  The ideal candidate is flexible and responsive to change. Employees in this position may be required to work extended hours, nights, holidays and/or weekends. Our residential programs require 24/7 monitoring; assigned shifts include day, evening and night.

  Please note that incumbents in this position are designed as non-emergency personnel.

  Hours to be Worked: 37.5

  Location: 288 Lyman Street, Westboro, MA

  Shift: 1st Shift 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM with Saturday and Sunday; Candidate must be flexible with schedule.

  Qualifications

  MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, administrative or managerial experience in business administration, business management or public administration the major duties of which involved program management, program administration, program coordination, program planning and/or program analysis, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

  Substitutions:

  I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.

  II. A Graduate degree with a major in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required (A) experience.

  III. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major other than in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.

  Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

  NOTE: No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.
