Ford’s Body Exterior organization is seeking a Technical Specialist specializing in Structural Adhesives and Sealers. This individual would serve the team as the lead subject matter expert in adhesives and sealers. As such, they own the development, authorship, sign-off and maintenance of all related engineering specification and requirements, and responsible to ensure programs are executing their designs with quality and efficiency. The TS works as part of a team to solve new product design challenges, plant concerns, material shortage issues, and develops new technologies (materials) to support future architectures.
Support Program Engineers – drive for quality and cost / weight efficiency
Feasibility assessment of program-specific material combinations during the development phase
Planning, execution and evaluation of adhesive & sealing joining trials with new materials and/or joining processes in internal and external laboratories in alignment with cross functional teams
Sign-off Adhesive and Sealer related requirements at key program milestones
Technology Development
Lead cross functional teams to develop new materials and joining / bonding applications which deliver future strategic solutions
Benchmark competition and develop advance projects to ensure Ford is best in class
Close cooperation with CAE-team for the development of simulation methods and joint cards
Institutionalize knowledge and best practices
Develop, author, lead sign-off and maintain Core documents including Engineering Specifications, Requirements, Design Rules, Quality Documents, training materials and other required materials for adhesives, sealers, baffles, tapes and related products
Develop new and continuously improved Engineering Specifications, standards and test methods – physical/analytical
Business Support:
Drive continuous improvement in the supply base
Lead/participate in solving production issues with manufacturing and cross-functional teams; these include and are not limited to: Stop-Ships, Field Service Actions, Warranty, Material Shortages
Participation in patent committees
Required Qualifications:
B.S. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related physical science field of study
10+ years as a Body Exterior (including Adhesives and Sealers) Design and Release Engineer or similar experience
5+ years experience with job responsibilities specific to adhesives and sealers
Demonstrated expert level knowledge in Adhesives and Sealer (pumpables, tapes, baffles, extruded other) products and supply base
Experience in all program phases from Pre-Program through Launch
Working knowledge of applicable Design, Analysis, Verification, Quality, Manufacturing, and Assembly methods
Demonstrated improvements in customer satisfaction, reduction in warranty, total cost reduction
Working knowledge and experience with Engineering toolsets – CAE / CATIA, TCE
Excellent written / verbal communication skills
Demonstrated track record of strong leadership behaviors
Excellent problem solving skills
Demonstrated capability to teach / coach / mentor and document technical knowledge
Self-starter: ability to work effectively with little oversight
Preferred Qualifications
M.S. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related physical science field of study
Experience presenting at Technical Conferences and Publishing Technical Papers
Experience with battery enclosures related adhesive and sealing products and cell vent management requirements
Patents / Invention, Defensive Disclosures / Trade Secrets and/or Technical Publications
Experience with Advanced Technology development – particularly in mixed materials bonding and aluminum
Experience with automotive program timing and delivery requirements
Experience writing Quality Documents, Engineering Specifications, Requirements, Design Rules or equivalent Core documents
Multiple automotive launches
