Summary:
We are seeking an optical engineer with a proven track record of innovation in optics across multiple industries to join our team in Meta Reality Labs. As the Tech Lead, you will define the technical roadmap for designing, testing and productizing optical systems and sub-components that are core to delivering transformative experiences in Meta AR/VR products. You will join an agile team that is laser-focused on innovating and productizing imaging and illumination consumer electronic optical systems that are fully hardened for high-volume manufacturing (HVM).
Required Skills:
Technical Lead, Optical Engineering Responsibilities:
Define the technical roadmap for a team of about 20 optical engineers involved in the design and productization of optics for cameras and depth perception systems.
Own the team’s innovation pipeline by identifying new technologies to investigate and shepherd them through a rigorous process for readying them for productization.
Define templates for documentation, work practices for the entire engineering team to adapt.
Design novel optical component design including refractive optics, diffractive optics and meta surfaces.
Contribute in design validation, lab characterization and failure analysis of optical components and systems.
Identify new vendor capabilities and drive the vendors to maturity in optical process, performance, yield, quality, reliability, and ramp new optical components and systems for mass production readiness.
Operate in heavily cross functional and ambiguous work environments and bring clarity.
Ability to articulate technical vision and communicate complex concepts with extreme clarity upwards, downwards and sideways.
Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as business needs dictate.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
BS in the field of Optics, Physics or other optics-related fields with 15+ years or experience.
5+ years experience of taking optical products from concept phase to shipping phase in the consumer electronics industry (high volume products).
5+ years of experience in developing optical systems with multi-disciplinary teams.
Knowledge of geometrical optics, physical optics and aberration theory.
Knowledge and experience with optics fundamentals including imaging, illumination, radiometry and colorimetry.
Knowledge of passive lens athermalization concepts as well as active auto-focus systems.
Working knowledge of opto-mechanical principles.
5+ years of experience with hands-on test, prototype build, debugging, and calibration of optical systems, equipment, and instrumentation.
Hands-on experience of optical instruments such as interferometer, spectrometer, scatterometer, lab microscope, Image Master type lens qualification tools.
10+ years experience with at least one optical CAD (eg: Zemax, CodeV for imaging system design/tolerancing) and 5+ years experience with at least one non-sequential optical CAD (eg: Zemax, LightTools, Fred, ASAP) for illumination design and stray light analysis.
Experience collaborating with internal cross-functional teams as well as external optics vendors.
Proficiency in optical tolerancing and yield estimation. Knowledge of industry experience in miniature optical components and assembly tolerances.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in the field of Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related degree.
Experience with polarization optics, thin films and coatings.
Experience with NIR optics and deep UV optics.
