The Systems department supports and maintains the University's server and storage infrastructure including physical and virtual server infrastructure, Microsoft 365, and other cloud environments. In addition to the primary job function, we manage backups and disaster recovery, server security compliance, identity and access management, and monitoring and proactive management.
The Staff Assistant, Systems Administrator is responsible for administering the University's compute, storage, and cloud infrastructure and seeks to continuously improve service reliability, security, and efficiency through monitoring, diagnosis, upgrades, and the introduction of new technology, services, processes, and procedures.
Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Director of Systems.
Supervision Exercised: Student Employees, Graduate Assistants, and Interns as available and appropriate.
This position is within the Association of Professional Administrators (APA) union and is subject to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
Essential Duties:
Participate in the design, implementation, and maintenance of the University's on premise and cloud server and storage infrastructure including but not limited to Windows Server, Red Hat Linux Server, VMWare, and the hyperconverged virtual server environment.Participate in the design and implementation of system components including new servers, hardware, software, and upgrades.Understanding of Microsoft Identity Management (MIM), or equivalent identity management solutions.Administer on premise, and cloud hosted services including but not limited to Microsoft Active Directory, Exchange, SQL, SCCM, Microsoft 365, Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), etc.Write, maintain, and document programs, scripts, and procedures to automate systems management functions, examples include Python scripting, bash scripting.Works alongside other Linux administrators to maintain and update Ansible tower and scripts.Ensure Linux and Windows servers meet or exceed security standards and compliance per BSU standards.Collaborate across teams on detailed technical requirements, project planning, implementation approaches, and problem solving.Monitor, propose, and implement service enhancements that will improve the performance and reliability of assigned IT Services in accordance with industry best practices.Assists with the management of the university's backup and recovery software.Provide reports and metrics as needed to support requirements analysis and growth planning.Participate in compliance activities that include log collection, analysis, and reporting.Assist with the management of the universities local SQL servers.Stay informed about the current state and future advancements in compute, storage, and cloud service technologies.Provide support for primary Data Center and remote server closets. This is to include: UPS, Racks, PDUs etc. May be required to travel to remote datacenter locations for various support reasons.Actively supports the University's initiatives of Diversity & Social Justice.Job duties may require that work be performed after-hours and on weekends.Additional responsibilities as directed by the supervisor consistent with rank and position.Ability to work independently and as part of a remote team.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree Required. Relevant professional experience may be substituted to meet this requirement. Minimum four years of server administration experience. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues required. Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills required. Demonstrate strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in server virtualization technologies. Experience with cloud infrastructure/IaaS technologies, examples include AWS /Azure. Demonstrated experience in implementing and monitoring Linux CIS benchmark standards. Demonstrated experience administering storage area networks. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft System Center Suite. Demonstrated experience supporting and administering Red Hat Linux. Experience with the Microsoft Identity Management System ( MIM ). Experience managing MS SQL and HA SQL environments. Experience with Ansible Tower or other Linux management platforms. Related industry certifications, examples include MCSA , MCSE , MCTS , or other Microsoft certifications. Related professional experience in a higher education setting preferred.
