The Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) within the Bureau of Climate and Environmental Health (BCEH) is seeking a technical and goal-oriented individual to fill the role of the CLPPP Epidemiologist I. The Epidemiologist I will provide epidemiologic support to CLPPP through the surveillance and analysis of childhood lead poisoning and environmental lead abatement data. Responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, preparing annual reports, carrying out program evaluation activities and conducting statistical tests and interpreting lead screening and poisoning rates, for CLPPP, the public, and publications. The Epidemiologist I will engage in tasks including disease investigation, exposure assessment, review of laboratory, clinical, environmental, and epidemiologic data, and contribute to written reports. The incumbent must have excellent communication skills and must be comfortable communicating by phone and email with CLPPP program staff, CLPPP surveillance system vendors, and external stakeholders such as clinical providers, laboratories, etc. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES(These duties and responsibilities are not all-inclusive): * Engage in entry-level duties, including disease investigation, exposure assessment, review of laboratory, clinical, environmental, and epidemiologic data, and contribute to written reports. * Investigate and analyze epidemiological situations; monitor state and local lead data and sample collection activities; contribute to designing and conducting epidemiological/statistical research and investigation activities. * Perform statistical tests and interpret lead screening and poisoning rates, environmental intervention data, and exposure assessments. * Review the methods for collection and quality assurance of health and environmental data to assess completeness and accuracy. * Review professional journals, health bulletins and other publications to keep informed of current trends and new data in the field of disease prevention and control, exposure assessment, and environmental health. * Prepare public information on the prevalence of childhood lead poisoning for the Web. * Evaluate screening rates and blood lead level prevalence rates for vulnerable populations to help target resources and programmatic activities to those in Massachusetts. * Assist with the preparation of the Statewide CLPPP annual report, which includes data analyses, calculating prevalence and incidence rates by blood lead level and age of child, screening rates, and assessment of risk indicators. * Maintain confidential records in accordance with state privacy laws and department regulations. * * * *REQUIRED QUALIFICATION: * Knowledge of the principles and practices of epidemiology. * Skill to prepare and interpret charts and diagrams, manage databases, construct data files, conduct and support data entry, and perform data edits / cleaning as needed. * Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of epidemiologic and demographic data to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. * Proficiency in Microsoft products (specifically Access, SQL coding) and SAS or other data analysis software. * Talent to establish rapport and deal tactfully with others. * * * *PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Familiarity with electronic data collection systems and/or data surveillance systems. * Experience in data QA/QC // // // WORKING CONDITIONS: * While performing the duties of this classification, incumbents work indoors within an office setting.
