Summary:
The Supervisor- Nursing is a registered nurse, prepared for the practice across the continuum of care, within any healthcare setting in today’s changing healthcare environment. S/he must be adequately prepared by experience and training to educate and mentor the team including experienced and new staff. S/he must be adequately prepared by experience and training to care for patients ranging in acuity from non-urgent to life threatening. S/he must demonstrate an ability to cope with crisis situations while displaying calm and demonstrate recognition of the value and dignity of the individual. The Supervisor- Nursing is first and foremost a clinical expert in the area of practice. The Supervisor meets key leadership competencies including building trust, promoting safety, resolving conflict, communicating effectively, demonstrating adaptability and flexibility, advocating for patients, resource procurement and allocation, and achieving results. The Supervisor- Nursing is often responsible for developing and implementing policy, assurance compliance with regulations, completing clinical projects, initiating performance improvement activities, leading staff development and working collaboratively with the entire healthcare team. May be ambulatory or hospital based, but in physician-based practices, the SUPV-Nursing would supervise Clinical Practice Lead/ RNs.
Responsibilities:
The Supervisor is expected to: 1. Be responsible for broad oversight of the department and serve as leader in the absence of the manager. 2. Assists in the day-to-day management of the department including assisting in staffing, supply management, policy development, etc. 3. Plans, develops and proceeds with education of new staff including development of employee orientation, preceptorship, and evaluation programs. 4. Lead efforts to assure regulatory compliance with core measures, best practices, performance improvement initiatives, and data collection and analysis. 5. Participates in regulatory work (e.g.: Joint commission team site visits, state surveys, mock surveys, etc.) 6. Analyze situations associated with process or system failures, works through RL reporting and Sentinel Event reporting. Assists with process change to help prevent these situations from reoccurring. 7. Lead and mentor unit specific staff, through patient experience initiatives, including Interdisciplinary Team Reports/Huddle, Patient Rounding, complaint management, etc. 8. Works with manager to roll out employee engagement initiatives, including engagement action plans and staff recognition efforts. 9. Provide formal and informal staff education and assist with competency development and assessment. a. Coordinate annual staff competency fairs b. Plan and develop educational sessions for areas of specialty. Either i. As an expert within their assigned department, or; ii. Provide various educational offerings as assigned, and based on organizational needs 10. Assist in the research, development, and implementation of care policies and procedures. 11. Analyze, evaluate, report, communicate, and implement emerging care trends. 12. Age specific standards: The individual in this position must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the patient. In addition, he/she must possess the ability to assess patient data relative to age specific needs and provide care as described in the department’s policies. 13. Collaborate with the healthcare team (nursing, providers, ancillary services and environmental services) to optimize clinical care. 14. Perform employee evaluations and competency assessments, including assisting the manager with infor, API, or other duties as assigned. 15. Provide complex patient and family education or deal with complaints. 16. Assist in procuring, scheduling, and assigning staff, using standardized acuity assessments. 17. Participate in Northern Light Health System IS activities in evaluating order sets, Joint Practice Protocols, and other IS activities as needed. 18. Communicate activities, functions, roles, and projects with key constituents. 19. Collaborate with Colleges and Higher education institutions to develop high quality, effective student rotations. 20. Maintain a safe environment for healthcare workers, patients, and/or visitors complying with NLH policies and procedures; review, document and address all incidents and safety violations within area of responsibility; report all lost time due to reported work injuries within 24 hours to local HR BP or Safety contact; support and facilitate open and non-punitive communication among NLH employees, non-employed healthcare workers, patients and visitors, reporting and addressing patient and environmental safety concerns.
