SUPERVISING PUBLIC HEALTH NURSEDistinguishing Features of the Class: The work involves responsibility for supervising public health nursing activities and participating in division-wide planning and policy formation. The work varies according to assignment, however in general, the incumbent schedules, assigns, reviews and evaluates nursing activities, reviews documentation, attends case conferences, interprets federal, state and local public health rules and regulations, and participates in a variety of planning and/or policy meetings. This position differs from that of Public Health Nurse in that a Supervising Public Health Nurse exercises supervision over field nurses and is involved in planning and policy development. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Community Health Services with leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate nursing personnel. Does related work as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor's degree in nursing, and two (2) years of experience in providing public health nursing services and two (2) years community health care administrative or management experience or in a diagnostic treatment center or clinic which shall have been in a supervisory capacity in a federal, state, or local agency.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:1) License and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.2) Possession of a valid New York State Driver's license or otherwise demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.3) Completion of fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in public health and management related topics approved by the New York State Department of Health within the first year of employment in this title.
