The Port Department is looking for an Operations intern to join their team!
About the Port Department:
The Port of New York and New Jersey is the gateway to one of the most concentrated consumer markets in North America and the largest port on the East Coast. Through its network of terminals, railroads, roads, warehouses, and distribution centers, Port Authority keeps the world's global trade industry moving. The Operations unit at New Jersey Marine Terminals (NJMT) supports the successful operation of container and roll-on-roll-off cargo, bulk and specialized cargos, container terminals, and public berth operations.
Responsibilities:
· Support the Operations Manager on day-to-day activities and facility needs
· Assist Senior Marine Terminal Operations Representative in the standardization of all NJMT's Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
· Assist Senior Marine Terminal Operations Representative with the research and development of a Hazardous Materials Guidance
· Assist with research in support of the 2025 Tariff Updates
· Attend meetings and inspections for facility projects, events, and emergencies
· Collaborate with Operations Representatives to restructure and enhance NJMT's Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)
· Update databases as needed based on operational need
· Present a report on the status of projects and other work that was completed during the internship
· Interns may be given immediate, short-term assignments based on operational needs at the facility, but should otherwise focus on accomplishing the assigned projects in their twelve weeks at NJMT
Qualifications:
· Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program through the Fall 2024 semester (August 2024 or beyond)
· Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills
· Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region
· Interest in public service and/or transportation
· Willingness to learn
Desired:
· Familiarity with Public Administration, Policy Writing, Emergency Management, Project Management, and Operations
· Strong interpersonal skills
· Ability to establish plans, set priorities, coordinate activities, and delegate tasks and responsibilities appropriately
Internship Details:
· The start date will be Thursday, May 30 with an orientation that will take place at 4 World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan
· The internship will last 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 23
· This is a full-time internship (generally 5 days per week at 7.25 hours of work per day plus a 45-minute break)
· The format is expected to be fully in-person at 260 Kellogg St. in Port Newark, NJ
· The hourly salary range is $17.20 to $28.85 (the hourly salary is determined by internship type and school year)
