The Planning & Regional Development is looking for an intern to join its team!
About the Planning Department:
The Port Authority Planning Department's role is to: champion and foster innovation throughout the agency; provide thought leadership on strategic transportation needs within a broader regional context; and provide subject matter and analytical expertise to support policy and investment decisions
Within the Planning Department, the Regional Planning and Coordination division: provides agency-wide thought leadership on emerging challenges of strategic importance to the Port Authority; develops initiatives to address regional goods movement, trans-Hudson commuting, sustainability, bicycle planning, environmental justice, and other regional issues; acts as a liaison to transportation agencies, local planning departments, and MPOs; and provides a sound quantitative basis for planning initiatives agencywide, through market analysis, travel behavior modeling, travel demand forecasting, mapping and geospatial analysis, network performance analysis, and tracking and forecasting of development and demographic patterns
Responsibilities:
Analyze the cost of regional commuting in different neighborhoods and assess its affordability for disadvantaged groups using data from the American Community Survey and other sources.Prepare maps and other visualizations to communication the results of the analysisPrepare a presentation or research brief on your findings
Qualifications:
Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program through the Fall 2024 semester (August 2024 or beyond)Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.Excellent written and oral communication skillsInterest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey regionInterest in public service and/or transportationInterest in public service
Desired:
Urban Planning, Public Policy, Geography or a related majorInterest in urban policyExperience with ArcGIS and coding (R, Python, etc.)Analytical skills
Internship Details:
The start date will be Thursday, May 30 with an orientation that will take place at 4 World Trade Center in Lower ManhattanThe internship will last 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 23This is a full-time internship (generally 5 days per week at 7.25 hours of work per day plus a 45-minute break)The format is expected to be hybrid (2 days virtual, 3 days in-person at 4 World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan)The hourly salary range is $17.20 to $28.85 (the hourly salary is determined by internship type and school year)These details are subject to change
