State Politics and Issues Editor
The Arizona Republic | azcentral.com, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking an editor for state politics and issues.
Our reporters are at the epicenter of challenges to democracy, contentious elections cycles and the drama of divided state government. They deliver watchdog reporting on Arizona government that creates ripple effects across the state.
This team needs an editor familiar with state government machinations but most importantly a leader confident in news judgment, who understands the importance of breaking exclusive and original news and the urgency of getting it published fast. The editor also must have the soft skills to nurture, support and challenge reporters with some of the most demanding responsibilities in the newsroom.
This team covers the state Capitol and includes other reporters covering business, energy and consumer news. The editor will work closely and collaboratively with the national politics editor and other editors covering local news beats and topics.
The job and the continuing challenge to reach audiences requires creativity, flexibility and innovation. The position demands and will reward initiative, insight, accuracy and urgency.
Responsibilities: Edit and publish stories on political and business topics with an eye toward accuracy, fairness and context. Optimize content, paying special attention to headlines, SEO and fields visible to social audiences. Coach reporters with varying levels of experience. Use social and other tools to spot high-interest items. Uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity, ethics and credibility. Requirements: Bachelor's or master's degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a journalism leadership and/or management role. Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct. Sharp news judgment. Strong planning and organizational skills. Talent for careful line editing, lively headlines and appropriate context. Expert knowledge of analytics and other tools to measure digital audience reach and impact. Self-motivation and self-direction. Effective communication skills; ability to get along with diverse personalities. Ability to multitask and excel under deadline pressure in a rapidly changing news environment. Must work comfortably in a job that will be fast-paced, data-driven, shaped constantly by feedback and experimentation. Strong coaching skills. Must be able to clearly convey expectations and to provide constructive feedback and support to your team. Readiness to apply innovative, creative thinking to support the company's goals.
