Job Description
Texas A&M Forest Service is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented team member who has a passion for community forestry and arboriculture. This individual will be a part of an integral team in the Forest Resource Development division that works to deliver technical assistance to support the agency mission of assuring the state's trees, forest and related natural resources are protected and sustained.
The Staff Forester / Woodland Ecologist will provide leadership to municipalities, non-profits, planning groups and other community forestry stakeholders in the Rio Grande Valley region to help build sustainable programs that ensure healthy trees and forests. They will deliver education, outreach and technical assistance that support enhancing community tree cover to optimize associated benefits and contribute to the quality of life residents. Occasional duties to include training and response activities associated with the emergency response mission of the agency and support for additional agency programs. This position is for a term of 5 years with an extension contingent on available funding.
Responsibilities:-Integrate urban & community forestry into all scales of planning.-Promote the role of urban & community forestry in human health and wellness.
-Cultivate diversity, equity and leadership within the urban forestry community.
-Strengthen urban & community forestry health and biodiversity for long-term resilience.
-Improve urban & community forestry management, maintenance and stewardship.
-Diversity, leverage and increase funding for urban & community forestry.
-Increase public awareness and environmental educations to promote stewardship.
-Other duties as assigned.

Work Conditions: This job may require exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as wind, sunlight, rain and temperature extremes. It may also require walking long distances, standing for extended periods, twisting, bending, reaching, kneeling lifting and carrying heavy objects. Job stress can be frequent when confronted with deadlines of various projects, frequent travel, long hours and adverse weather conditions.

Education and Experience:Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Horticulture or other related field.
Preferred Education: Two (2) or more higher education degrees in Forestry, Horticulture or related field. OR one higher education degree in Forestry and second higher education degree in program-applicable field.Required Experience: None
Preferred Experience: Two (2) or more years of experience in urban forestry, land management, conservation or hydrology
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Required Knowledge: MS Office.
Preferred Knowledge: iTree suite of tools. GIS.Required Skills: Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, both with technical and non-technical audiences. Organization.
Preferred Skills: Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills. Presentation and teaching skills.
Required Abilities: Work effectively with minimal supervision. Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others, including internal and external partners.
Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:Required: Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment. Ability to gain ISA Certified Arborist credential with one (1) year of hire.
Preferred: SAF Certified Forester. ISA Certified Arborist. NWCG 130/190
