Amazon Robotics is building a new, foundational automation system which will transform warehouse operations by enabling the integration of multiple, complex, automation solutions. The team is seeking a talented and motivated System Development Engineer to design and develop controls for robotics systems and industrial automation equipment.
The System Development Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, integrating, troubleshooting, and optimizing various automation solutions, while acting as a engineering leader for our internal product development teams, internal/external engineering partner teams, and on behalf of our global Amazon customers.
Key job responsibilities
Design, simplify and continuously improve system controls architecture including machine control code, networking, electrical design and safety design
Develop controls code utilizing structured text and ladder-logic on Codesys and RSLogix 5000 platforms
Identify and implement system optimizations
Debug internal and field issues; develop tools and best practices for system monitoring and troubleshooting
Mentor and develop junior engineers in design and development best practices
Contribute to value engineering of the system’s electrical and controls hardware components
25% travel expected to support onsite system testing

Basic Qualifications
5+ years of systems design, software development, operations, automation, and process improvement experience
7+ years of experience designing and implementing machine motion-control and axes-control systems for complex industrial automation products.
7+ years of control system working experience in PLC-based controls design, development, implementation and support.
7+ years machine control code development experience with expert level skills in structured text and/or ladder-logic
Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs, Siemens PLCs, and/or Soft PLCs/IPCs
Experience deploying and supporting industrial automation products at scale
Experience in testing and implementing software (embedded operating systems and programming).
Experience utilizing software development best practices for code management, reviews and unit testing
Experience with operating and managing Unix/Linux systems (both embedded and “full scale”)
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
Experience developing controls code utilizing Codesys platform
Experience with industrial automation/3-phase electrical design and systems
Experience with TCIP and industrial networks
Experience with industrial automation safety design
Embedded programming experience with C/C++, Java, Python, or similar languages
Experience with HMI design and development
Ability to recognize and implement improvements to the human aspects of systems development, implementation, and use.
Demonstrated ability to go beyond specialization and combine controls and software systems engineering skills to implement new solutions at the organizational or architectural level.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $121,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $235,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
