This position reports directly to the Associate General Counsel - Litigation and is responsible for providing support to outside counsel for all large and complex litigation cases, advising our third party administrator, Sedgwick, regarding all large and complex litigation cases and claims, managing and overseeing the business subpoena response process, guiding retained counsel in the drafting of federal and state pleadings, advising field operations in the handling of discovery requests, and representing the company in settlement conferences and mediations. This position will be based in Rosemont, Illinois.
This position has been segmented as Hybrid meaning there is a combination of onsite and remote work.
Responsibilities:
Acts as the point of contact for our defense firm's collection of data and documents responsive to litigation discovery requests served upon the company.Independently develops and executes the legal strategy for initial drafts of discovery pleadings responsive at the state and federal court level.Manages and oversees any reviews and studies conducted by third party providers to assess data responsive to complex litigation. This include the review of policies, processes, and procedures at corporate and the field level.Advising on long-and short-range planning for complex litigation and creates supporting trackers, spreadsheets, and reports for internal and retained counsel.Independently manages litigation strategy and directs long-and short-range planning for low exposure litigation and claims.Advises senior leaders, other internal clients and retained counsel specific to lawsuits and investigations.Oversees accuracy, adequacy or adherence to discovery issues, and takes the necessary corrective actions.Manages and oversees the business subpoena response process.Review and summarize responsive pleadings, legal proceedings and subsequent motions, papers and court orders.Represents the company before government agencies in connection with safety investigations, administrative proceedings, and subpoenas and civil investigative demands.Manages and oversees claims on behalf of the company in connection with class action settlements and other claim opportunities and supervising client relationship with recovery firms.Manages and oversees external legal counsel and internal stakeholders on specific assignments, review preliminary information from internal stakeholders, and provide summaries to internal and retained counsel.Manages legal hold processes for litigation matters to ensure compliance with legal requirements for data preservation.Develops and leads training of field and support office people managers and HR professionals on topics including serious vehicle accident, warehouse incidents, and best practices in investigations.Work alongside Litigation and Regulatory teams to conduct fact-finding investigations to gather information, documents, and data in response to discovery and regulatory agency requests.Manages, supervises, plans and coordinates deadlines for TPA and other third-party providers specific to court ordered deadlines.Provides other legal and administrative support to the General Counsel, Associate General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel as requested.
Qualifications:
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree; paralegal certificate and/or relevant work experience strongly preferred.
Related Experience/Requirements:
Minimum five years related Litigation Paralegal experience; corporate experience preferred but not required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Must have the professionalism and sophistication to interact with directors, senior and executive level management.• Must be able to support litigation requests made by outside counsel representing the organization in courts.Must be familiar with and have significant experience with state and federal court practices, including motion practice, docket and calendar practices.• Must have strong investigative skills and ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.Strong analytical and communications skills with ability to interact with employees across all job levels.Strong project management skills.Working knowledge of electronic discovery processes, internet technology, regulatory investigations, and general litigation.Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.The ability to meet production deadline in a fast-paced environment.
