Sr. Director, Risk and Program Governance, Experience Design
The Senior Director, Risk and Program Governance, Experience Design is a strategic leader who plays a crucial role in the success of an organization by aligning and collaborating effectively with executive-level Design, Product and Enterprise efforts. This cross functional leadership role will manage our risk, research operations, and tools organizations.
The Senior Director, Risk and Program Governance, Experience Design is accountable for developing and executing an operational strategy to address complex business challenges while ensuring governance of enterprise-wide tools, third-party vendor management, risk governance, and data protection. They will lead the Experience Risk Research Operations & Tools team, including Practice leads, operations professionals, and project resources, to support design risk management, controls testing, audit readiness, tools compliance, and governance. The successful candidate will be accountable for adoption and measurement of risk standards, controls, as well as user-centered delivery principles and processes, while also ensuring data protection and risk governance are built into all design activities.
Core Responsibilities
The Sr. Director is responsible for developing, overseeing and executing an operational strategy for a data driven, risk managed experience design organization, ensuring governance of enterprise-wide design and research tools, third-party vendor management, risk governance, research operations practices and data protection.
Business & People Leadership:
Lead cross functional peers including design, business, product, and technology partners in practices that achieve operational excellence and uplifts experience and business goals and imperatives
Accountable for developing an operational strategy to address complex business challenges associated with a maturing design organization
Develop and manage a cross functional team of program managers, operations professionals, and project resources within the design organization who are responsible for supporting design compliance and practice as well as portfolio management
Drive operational excellence through effective project management and cross-functional collaboration, ensuring that all design activities align with risk governance and data protection requirements.
Standards & Practice Management:
Accountable for adoption and measurement of standards, risk practice management, as well as user centered delivery principles and processes
Accountable for clearly measuring and demonstrating the impact of controls and risk posture to senior leadership and executives, emphasizing standards and practices along the way
Uphold standards across team human centered strategy, research, alignment, analysis, process improvement, and change management to improve design’s risk profile
Lead organizational wide initiatives to help design effectively scale impact
Serve as a resource and collaborator with product, engineering, risk and other cross-functional partners to collectively identify opportunities to improve products and experience risk
Advocate for the design risk process and appetite across the business
Portfolio & Program Management:
Make strategic recommendations that influence business and design decisions.
Integrate risk knowledge, subject-matter expertise, and understanding of industry and design trends to make sound decisions and influence business direction in human centered ways
Accountable for organizational KPIs/OKRs, driving progress against design imperatives and removing roadblocks that impede progress
Craft and execute operational strategy (i.e. allocation, resourcing, prioritization) to drive risk managed experience outcomes
Using best practices, bring order to complex programs, monitor and maintain the organization’s portfolio(s), and drive large bodies of operational work forward
Develop and manage key metrics on impact of design and the health of experience teams, proactively identifying and solving for any gaps
Partner with enterprise teams to innovate and implement human centered operational programs (i.e., Human Centered Design, Software Delivery Lifecycle, Global Learning & Development) for the benefit of the larger organization
Risk Governance & Data Protection:
Establish and maintain policies, procedures, and controls for risk governance and data protection in the design operations function
Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements related to risk governance and data protection
Work closely with the legal and compliance teams to ensure that all design activities align with regulatory requirements related to risk governance and data protection.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or Military experience
At least 5 Years of Project Management experience
At least 3 Years of People Management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
At least 8 years of Project Management experience
At least 5 years of People Management experience
Exceptional communication and collaboration skills
Excellent problem solving and influencing skills
Master’s degree or advanced Degree in Behavioral Science, economics, Cyber security, MBA or related field
Experience in a leadership role leading Risk, Compliance, or Operations teams, or a combination

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $236,800 - $270,300 for Sr. Director, Project Mgmt
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
