Overview of the Position
The Incubation Lab is dedicated to data-driven innovation within Commercial Lines Data Science at The Hartford. The lab focuses on value-multiplying our insurance portfolio by evaluating new, cutting-edge technologies, datasets, and insuretech vendors; prototyping predictive models; and supporting The Hartford’s data science teams and their business partners in leveraging data to drive process and product improvements.
The Hartford’s Incubation Lab seeks an energetic and passionate Senior Data Scientist to push forward the design, development, and implementation of solutions modernizing and transforming our operations and business based on vehicle telematics and other sensor data. This position requires a thorough knowledge of statistical or probabilistic modeling, data transformation and visualization, and experimental design, and will offer career-accelerating opportunities to build skills and domain expertise in the business and craft of data science and the Internet of Things.
In this role, you will be part of a team working in a fast-paced, open-ended environment to help define how our firm’s data scientists and business teams leverage telematics and other sensor data to improve our processes and products. Success will depend on your ability to rapidly learn the craft and the business and quickly deliver capabilities and recommendations for partners within the Internet of Things Lab and other stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
Engage with technical and business stakeholders to help define problems and design solutions
Identify and advocate for opportunities for experimentation, predictive modeling, and adding value through understanding data
Lead design of experiments for both internal and external stakeholders
Interpret data and experimental results for technical and non-technical business stakeholders
Understand, communicate, and help realize the value of experiments and data in business decision-making
Participate in reviewing work with business partners and team members on an ongoing basis to calibrate deliverables against expectations
Assist in identifying and assessing the value and quality of new data sources and analytical techniques to ensure ongoing competitive advantage
Create data visualizations and tooling used by business stakeholders

Q ualifications :
3-5 years of data science experience in a business environment
Experience with data science tools including: scripting languages (ex: python), SQL (ex: Oracle, PL/SQL), and big data tools and/or cloud environments (ex: AWS, Spark, Azure, Hadoop, Snowflake)
Demonstrated analytical approach with a strong interest in defining and resolving open-ended problems by delivering innovative approaches and solutions
Track record of analytical projects covering all stages of data utilization, from collection through transformation to analysis and evaluation of implications
Strong understanding of quantitative approaches, their benefits, and their limitations
Experience designing experiments, shepherding them to completion, and conducting statistical inference on the results
Able to communicate effectively with both technical and nontechnical teams, especially translating technical topics to inform business strategy
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$104,320 - $156,480
