The Group Reinsurance Plus (GRP) Actuarial team is seeking an inventive Data Engineer with strong understanding of data architecture, principles of ETL and Data Warehousing. GRP’s business model consists of these key initiatives: private label disability, private label group life, private label worksite products, traditional group life reinsurance, and LTD and group life premium waiver claim reserve buyouts. This role will work towards redesigning GRP's data structure and developing complex data assets that support organizational decision making. This position will have ownership of several important applications that support our Actuarial and Premium Administration functions.
Responsibilities
Provide thought leadership and technical skills needed to move forward our data integration efforts using tools such as SQL, Python, R
Evolve and maintain a position as a subject matter data expert, defining business requirements, providing data, and assisting in high level data analysis
Work with business partners and Actuarial teams to help develop requirements for data assets, prototyping, and data delivery
Support development of training materials and perform end-user training to ensure a high degree of customer engagement
Redesign our Long Term Disability reserve database to increase efficiency in data flow and become a more user-friendly application
Own and enhance our Premium Admin Tracker tool through continuous improvement in reporting capabilities
Anticipate needs of business partners and proactively provide recommended solutions from a reporting, systems and process efficiency standpoint.
Maintain strong ties to the Direct side of our business, in particular the Developers on the Group Benefits Actuarial team, to share knowledge and find synergies
Cross-train with Sr. Business Consultant on the team to learn and support additional applications and reporting needs. This includes, but is not limited to:
Maintenance and enhancement of Quote Tracking System
Metrics Reporting of underwriting, sales, and service results
Provide ad-hoc reporting and analysis to support the business, as needed
Qualifications
5+ years of data analysis, manipulation and development and ideally 2+ years of experience in the insurance or a related industry
Candidates must have the technical skills to transform, manipulate and store data, the analytical skills to relate the data to the business processes that generates it and the communication skills to disseminate information regarding the availability, quality, and other characteristics of the data to a diverse audience.
Experience accessing and retrieving data from disparate large data sources
Ability to analyze source systems and provide business solutions, then translating these solutions into actionable steps
Experience in creating and tuning SQL Queries
Experience with Indexes and basic Data Base Design
Self-starter with a willingness to become a data expert.
Demonstrate a passion to both learn new skills and lead discovery of the data research
Results oriented with the ability to multi-task and adjust priorities when necessary
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment with internal /external customers
Bachelor degree or equivalent experience in related field required
Experience or understanding of the following preferred:
SQL, R, and/or Python
ETL, Data Integration, Big Data, Cloud (AWS) Technologies
Citrix Environment
Tableau
Access/VBA
Reinsurance experience a plus
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$113,360 - $170,040
