Sports/Education Editor
The Plainview Daily Herald seeks a Sports/Education Editor who will be responsible for developing and programming the sports and education content in the Plainview Herald, on myplainview.com, its mobile pages and related sites, with the goals of expanding its audience, increasing reader engagement, and contributing to revenue growth.
Responsibilities:
Building innovative sports and education content with an emphasis on high schools, and local colleges, Recruiting readers and followers and sports community contributors. Developing and managing topics and areas for readers and followers to interact with the site and with each other. Developing and managing relationships with sports and education content partners. Assuring first-to-market coverage of significant local sports and education news and planning coverage of major events in the region. Adopt a flexible schedule that matches up with the flow of local sports and education coverage, with a special focus on area high schools. Fill in as managing editor in the absence of the managing editor. Produce non-sports and/or non-education content and take on general assignments when available at the request of the managing editor. Assist with selection and editing of sports and education content, and other content, if necessary, designated for placement within the Plainview Herald print product. Assist with advertising-led editorial projects when necessary. Assist with maintenance of publication's social media presence. Maintain an open line of communication with editor and other area team members regarding collaborative projects as necessary. Design work as needed. Various other duties as assigned by the managing editor.Requirements:
Preferred: At least three years' experience gathering or producing news and information primarily on the Web. Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field preferred Must have good writing and photography skills. Must be comfortable doing page design. Must be able and willing to forge and maintain relationships with sources. Must be mindful of representing the publication/company while out on assignment. Must practice good journalism ethics. The Plainview Herald was acquired by Hearst in 1979. The Texas newspaper is published in the nation's largest cotton-growing region and on the edge of the nation's heaviest concentration of cattle-feeding and beef-packing operations. Hale County is home to an ethanol plant, and the area has realized recent growth in milk and wind energy production. The Herald is a multiple winner of both the Sweepstakes Award of the West Texas Press Association and the Panhandle Press Association's General Excellence Award and has been recognized by the Texas Press Association.
