About Speech-Language Pathologist I

  Job Description

  Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children is seeking a dedicated and skilled Speech-language Pathologist. This individual will be responsible for evaluating and treating patients with communication, swallowing and cognitive-linguistic disorders. This position provides rehabilitation services to patients, develops and conducts the provision of treatment programs, consults with primary-care givers, family and professional staff. This position also performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

  SLPI will have schedule A & B with schedule A: Monday-Friday and Schedule B 1 Weekend on-site per month with Tuesday and Thursday off during week 4.

  DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assesses patient's needs, selects, administers and interprets appropriate evaluation procedures.

  • Assesses outgoing patients if not currently on the caseload to provide new caregivers with teaching strategies and information on how to maximize the discharged patients' communication skills.

  • Provides outpatient services, including assessments, school conferencing (via phone), family training and therapy.

  • Carries a direct caseload of patients providing appropriate long and short-term treatments as related to cognitive, social-emotional, physical and educational levels.

  • Participates in discharge planning for patients on caseload.

  • Participates in interdisciplinary/clinical team meetings.

  • Implements indirect rehabilitative carry-over programs as identified in the plan of care for patients on caseload.

  • Attends professional conferences to remain knowledgeable of state-of-the-art techniques, materials and AAC devices and shares this information with other rehabilitation staff and team members.

  • Regularly provides and documents patient and family education.

  • Provides in-service to team members, educational, and recreational staff on communication skills, strategies, use of AAC systems and indirect carry-over programs as well as oral motor/feeding programs.

  • Supervises speech and language pathology students including periodic evaluation of clinical performance, individual goal setting and professional development.

  QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE: (list knowledges, skills, abilities)

  • Knowledge of theories, principles and practices of communication therapy.

  • Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment used in providing communication therapy services.

  • Knowledge of standard medical terminology, symbols and abbreviations as applied to speech/language pathology.

  • Knowledge of treatment techniques and methods used in speech/language pathology.

  • Knowledge of the techniques and methods of diagnostic and prognostic testing relative to speech/language pathology.

  • Knowledge of the techniques used in the calibration and adjustment of equipment used for providing speech/language therapy.

  • Knowledge of the factors, trends and problems in providing communication therapy.

  • Knowledge of the social, psychological and educational problems of the hearing impaired and the physically impaired.

  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology as they relate to speech mechanisms.

  • Knowledge of the types and causes of speech and language disorders.

  Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC) located in Canton, MA is a Joint Commission Accredited, 90+ bed pediatric hospital predominately serving children and young adults (ages 8-22) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The mission of PRHC is to provide medical, rehabilitative, educational, recreational, habilitative, transitional, and complementary alternative medical services to children and young adults with multiple disabilities, assisting them to achieve their optimal level of independence in all aspects of life. PRHC offers coordinated medical care and therapies in a hospital-based environment, as well as, K-12 schooling, located on the grounds. Educational Services are provided by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. In addition, PRHC offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities such as swimming, horseback riding, adaptive sports, and many opportunities for socialization for disabled children and young adults.

  Special Requirements:

  Possession of a current and valid Speech-Language Pathologist license issued by the Massachusetts' Board of Registration for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.

  Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
