Description of Work Unit

The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.
Position Summary
The Specialist in Training Counselor will provide individual counseling services to veterinarians enrolled in a Specialty in Training Program within the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biological Sciences ( CVMBS ) This role is housed in the Veterinary Health Complex ( VHC ) on South Campus and primarily serves Specialists in Training (SITs) including interns, residents and post-doctorate fellows. Counseling sessions will predominately be scheduled on evenings and weekends and will include both in-person and tele-health options.
Use appropriate treatment models, including brief therapy and problem-based/solution-focused treatment
Provide crisis intervention, management, resources, and information to address crisis, collaborating with University Health Network and outside community agencies as needed.
Maintain a high level of confidentiality as mandated by the state and department of regulatory agencies.
Take a proactive and preventative approach to wellness and burnout, working collaboratively with the Argus Institute and other campus experts to implement and maintain a support program that promotes a culture of help-seeking and self-care.
Act as a liaison to facilitate and awareness and access to campus resources and community resources as needed.
Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; Clinical Sciences will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Required Job Qualifications
Master’s degree or doctorate in mental health counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or psychology.
Counselors must be licensed by a State Board to provide counseling (e.g., LCSW , LMFT , LPC , PsyD or similar credentials)
2 years of experience providing individual and group mental health counseling
Demonstrated commitment and understanding of wellness, self-care, compassion fatigue, burnout, and stress management
Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; Clinical Sciences will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

The SIT Counselor will provide individual and group counseling services to veterinarians enrolled in a Specialty Training Program within CVMBS .
Schedule appointments and conduct initial intakes, identify presenting issues and best plan for therapeutic process with appropriate treatment models
Non-traditional hours must be offered for counseling sessions, including some evenings and weekends in order to provide broad access for SITs to utilize this resource.
Provide crisis intervention, management, resources and information to address the crisis, collaborating with University Health Network and outside community agencies as needed.
Maintain a high level of confidentiality as mandated by the state and department of regulatory agencies.
Complete paperwork, case notes and administration as necessary.
Take a proactive and preventative approach to wellness and burnout, working collaboratively with the Argus Institute and other campus experts to implement and maintain a support program that promotes a culture of help-seeking and self-care.
Act as a liaison to facilitate an awareness and access to campus and community resources
Work with Assistant Department Head of Clinical Sciences and Academic Support Coordinator to address SITs of concern when required.
