The Opportunity
This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location in the Global Engineering Services division.
In the main roll of Small Unit Manager, will you be responsible for managing a small cafeteria within Abbott Foodservice. You will monitor and maintain Abbott and contract employee schedules, attendance, and payroll. You will be accountable for production, quality, safety, portion control and appearance of all food and beverages within one of our 8 corporate dining facilities. Additionally, you will be responsible for all administrative, operational, and fiscal tasks, while exemplifying a positive management style to cultivate a constructive work environment. You will tactfully handle guest concerns and issues while striving to meet their expectations from all levels of the organization including vendors, suppliers, and government inspectors.
The role of Abbott House Catering Manager, you are responsible for overseeing catering needs for Abbott House special events from an outside vendor - including food, beverages, floral, and linen. Most of the Abbott House Event happen in the late afternoon and early evening. The catering manager will supervise the commercial kitchen space, uphold high standards of cleanliness and functionality. The candidate will communicate directly with each Executive event coordinator to define the needs of the event, often serving as a liaison of Abbott to event suppliers. The catering manager must be present for the duration of each event - arriving prior to service staff and leaving after everyone has exited the facility. The catering manager is often the first point of contact during events for questions regarding access and other event relations inquires. Additionally, the catering manager communicates facility and operational issues to the Abbott House Manager from corporate relations.
What You’ll Work On
Direct, support and counsel the team members.
Assist the cater in coordinating, expediting and execution of various food items for each event
Inform culinary team once guests arrive and expedite the food service process to meet coordinators timeline
Provide a high level of guest service and communication
Maintain discreet conflict resolution, confidentiality and professionalism during interactions with leadership, staff or guests
Maintain a strong sense of cultural sensitivity
Ensure proper vendor invoice processing.
Conduct inspections with the Lake County Health Department to ensure compliance
Communicate facility and operational needs.
Uphold kitchen equipment preventative maintenance and cleanliness.
Assure all policies, procedures and guidelines are consistently followed for Abbott Lake County Foodservice
Effectively communicate all pertinent information and issues with employees, to manager and/or operations manager
Enforce and monitor all cash handling guidelines
Administer all performance evaluations, assist employees in developing measurable goals and growth plans for future development Perform other duties as assigned by the Abbott House manager or senior level management
Ensure the food products, and presentation are of the highest quality, and are served in a timely manner
Verify adherence to all food safety regulations, preparation, and presentation standards of Abbott and LCHD
Direct communication and planning with event coordinators both Abbott & Abbvie for event needs
Establish parameters and special requests surrounding the event / meetings and assist with all planning aspects
Coordinate menu and beverage selections and inquire about client dietary restrictions
Assisting with custom menu selection varieties to frequent event clients
Communicate event catering needs to the catering vendor
Obtain banquet event order (BEO) from the cater, and examine for accuracy
Provide general management oversight of outsourced services

Work in space with variable noise levels, ventilation, smoke, and extreme temperatures
Robust interpersonal skills
Required Qualifications
5 years of related culinary and/or managerial experience
Education Level: High School diploma or GED
Experience in restaurants, hotels, corporate dining, education, military, health care, and/or related food service operations
Knowledge of food and industry trends with a focus on quality, production, sanitation, safety, and presentation
Preferred Qualifications
ServSafe or Department of Health Certification is preferred
Computer skills and knowledge of MS Office products are preferred
Associate degree in Culinary Arts is preferred

The base pay for this position is $48,000.00 – $96,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
