Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. The Azure Data SQL Core Team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer with a passion for technology, performance and helping customers succeed on our platform by building the next set of industry-leading features and capabilities. SQL Core team works on key Azure SQL Database operating system capabilities (scheduling, memory management, locking, synchronization ...) with a focus on driving product performance and reducing TCO. We seek engineers who have experience in operating systems, hardware architectures (Intel, AMD, ARM), persistent memory technologies, performance and scalability on Windows and Linux. Engineers in SQL Core team will define and implement the next set of technologies, build new solutions and enable a new set of experiences for enterprise and cloud customers.

Responsibilities
Identifying and driving prototype projects for quick evaluation of design ideas.
Contributing to current and future product improvements around performance (perf/scale/SLA).
Looking into emerging and upcoming Azure HW SKUs and technologies, exploring new ideas to drive product improvements (hardware/software/config/COGS). Also includes modeling, competitive analysis & benchmarks.
Strengthening the engineering process to ensure cloud deployments (software & hardware) are done in the most efficient way and meet the targeted perf/scale/SLA goals.
Identifying improvements in supportability and customer self-diagnostics that enable live monitoring with focus on identifying/addressing performance related issues.
Spend days collaborating with, teaching, and learning from a diverse set of world class engineers.
Obsessed with customers, making data-driven decisions, and using telemetry collected from customers and production systems.

Qualifications
Required /Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Pythono OR equivalent experience.
2+ year’s experience with system programming i.e. in scheduling, memory management, locking & synchronization primitives, resource governance.

This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.Preferred/Additional Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Pythono OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Pythono OR equivalent experience.
6+ years of experience in designing and developing production quality software using C/C++; experience in improving product performance.
Experience in one or more of the following areas: Database/OS internals, hardware knowledge (CPU/System/Networking/Storage...), and Cloud related technologies.
2+ years of experience in Performance Engineering, covering design/development/usage of performance workloads/test-suites/tools to measure, analyze, root-cause and address performance and scalability issues.
Experience in both Windows and Linux system administration fundamentals.
Demonstrated technical leadership in a competent collaborative environment.
Reliable problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
