AbbVie’s Genomic Research Center (GRC) is seeking a highly qualified bioinformatics scientist to join the Emerging Technology (ET) Group within the Computational Genomics team in GRC with a focus on driving innovation by leveraging both internal and external Omic technologies to the drug discovery process. AbbVie’s GRC is a center of excellence for bioinformatics, functional genomics, and human genetics. The GRC works across all R&D including discovery and clinical development, supporting all of AbbVie’s therapeutic areas and multiple areas such as process sciences, global epidemiology, search and evaluation, and corporate strategy .
The ideal candidate should harbor a strong interest in learning how various genomic technologies/platforms can be used to address specific biological questions. This will require the candidate to work closely with our research scientists both in analysis support and experimental design and thus a strong background in molecular biology is a plus. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for developing prototype analysis workflow for these new technologies and should demonstrate programming experience in method/algorithm development along with a strong publication record. Since the technology landscape changes at a rapid pace, the strong candidate must keep up with the latest developments in key areas, be comfortable working with multiple technology platforms to evaluate their performance, and able to communicate findings to both internal and external stakeholders with diverse technical backgrounds.
Key Responsibilities:
Work closely with bench scientists at the GRC to develop analytical methods for new and state of the art omics technologies and make contributions in the area of experimental design, hypothesis generation, and follow-up studies
Evaluate, develop, and implement analytical workflows that encompass all aspect of data analysis for a variety of NGS experiments by leveraging existing published methods and develop novel method where necessary.
Devise and execute sophisticated models and analyses to extract meaningful and actionable information from the integration of various omics (e.g., genomic, transcriptomic, epigenomic, proteomic) datasets.
Train other bioinformaticians on analysis workflow you have developed, and work with bioinformatics engineers to optimize newly developed methods to improve efficiency.
Effectively interpret and communicate analytical results with both computational and noncomputational collaborators within GRC and other therapeutic areas.
Keep up with latest literature in key Omic areas.
Presentation at external conferences and publication of work strongly encouraged.
Qualifications
Sr. Scientist I - Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience, PhD and no experience necessary.
Sr. Scientist II - Masters, or PhD in computational biology, genetics, bioinformatics, computer science, engineering, (bio)statistics, mathematics, or related fields with a strong focus on data analysis with typically 8+ (MS), or 4+ (PhD) years of experience.
Fluency in one or more relevant programming languages such as R, Python, and be comfortable working in a HPC Linux environment.
Demonstrate ability to develop software (GitHub) and execute custom computational analysis plans by leveraging existing algorithms and relevant databases.
Strong record of publication and external presentations in areas of method/algorithm development or data analysis.
Strong communication skills, collaborative team spirit, open to tackling new challenges.
Additional skills preferred:
Experience with large-scale data analysis of next generation sequencing data, such as CRISPR and single cell omics (RNAseq, Perturbseq)
Experience in SQL programming and database design desirable
Experience in high content image analysis is a plus
