Job Description:
International Paper is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Research Technician to join the Helix® Innovation Team at our Global Innovation Center in Federal Way, WA. This role involves managing the End Product Lab and contributing to various innovation environments, including the Paper lab, Wet lab, and Absorbent Product Pilot Line (APPL).
This position plays a crucial role in handsheet production using various processes, testing handsheet properties according to standard test methods, benchmarking absorbent hygiene products, prototyping with new technologies, and evaluating end product performance. The candidate may also have the opportunity to support Phase & Gate projects as the technical lead scientist, after proving performance in other technical capabilities. The incumbent will report directly to the Helix® platform manager, and will also receive guidance from project managers, scientists, and cross functional teams. This position reports into the New Product Development organization.

$69,200 – $83,000
Multiple factors, including individual experience, skills, and abilities will determine where an employee is ultimately placed in the pay range.

Responsibilities:
End Product Lab Management:
Safety (JSAs; Chemical Inventory, WAT Meetings; Housekeeping Inspections; etc).
Maintain and calibrate equipment, working through rigorous schedules by working with maintenance team and external vendors, as needed.
Ensure efficient and accurate testing procedures - train Innovation resources to work safely work in the lab independently and with others. Develop new SOP and test methods if necessary.
Benchmark absorbent hygiene products, providing critical insights for product enhancement.
Work on the prototyping of new technologies related to cellulose fibers.
Evaluate end product performance and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Innovation Research Related Needs:
Collaborate with Helix® Innovation Team to contribute to handsheet production using various processes.
Conduct comprehensive testing of handsheet properties according to standard test methods.
Support pilot trials in our High Bay area involving operating specialized equipemnt, including Absorbent Product Pilot Line (APPL) and hydroentanglement unit.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain detailed and accurate records of testing procedures and results.
Prepare comprehensive reports summarizing findings and recommendations.
Technical Leadership:
Incumbent may have a future opportunity to act as the technical lead scientist in supporting Phase & Gate projects, providing expertise and guidance.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and work experience in a lab setting.
Alternatively associate degree with at least 7-10 years of lab experience.
Extensive experience in lab management, preferred in End Product Lab settings.
Strong organizational and leadership skills.
Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate innovations seamlessly into end products.
Communicate effectively with team members, stakeholders, and leadership.
Perferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of handsheet production processes and testing properties according to standard test methods.
Background in benchmarking absorbent hygiene products and prototyping with new technologies.
Experience supporting NPD Phase & Gate projects is a plus.
