Job Summary
What’s the Job?
This position will be remote eventually, but to start out the individual must be located within driving distance to be on site daily at our Peachtree City, GA plant. Once these projects are completed at this site, you will be expected to travel domestically within the U.S. to any of our other roofing plants as required but will be able to work from home. This position requires travel up to 60%.
The incumbent will be responsible for managing the development and safe implementation of equipment and installation (packages) within capital projects for the CertainTeed Roofing manufacturing plants including process design development, procurement, installation, and commissioning.
The Principal Mechanical Engineer reports to the Project Engineering Manager within the Project Management Office (PMO) and works for the Project Managers within the PMO in the assigned project, meeting or exceeding their expectations in terms of Scope, Cost, Schedule, and communication.
Lead the development of processes to deliver the best performance and lowest cost giving due regard to safety, operations, maintenance, and legal compliance.
Lead continuous improvement of process plant design in collaboration with the Operational Excellence Team and the Technical Office.
Scopes and develops initial designs and plans / layouts for the assigned packages and then expand them into detailed plans and drawings.
Provide feasibility studies, specifications, and budget estimates for capital schemes.
Support Project Managers on assigned projects led by Roofing TIP or led by the Roofing plant teams to deliver installations safely, on time and on budget.
Owns the assigned packages related to Design, Capital Request documents, Procurement (including, scope of works documents, contracts and change orders), Budget, Schedule, Installation and Commissioning.
Ensures efficient Take Over of projects to the Operations team, ensuring full documentation, training support, spare parts packages, preventive maintenance manuals, troubleshooting guides, etc.
In collaboration with the Technical Office, update and maintain best practice design information.
Creates weekly and monthly schedules, tracking progress and performance of the Engineering Team.
Participates in the design phase of the projects providing input and expertise to the process.
Follows the Project Execution Manual Check Lists (Stage gate process) applying the standard tools at each step of the project (risk register, change register, etc).
Maintain fluid communication and collaboration with other members of Roofing TIP: Project Management Office PMO, OPEX team, Loss Prevention Team, and other corporate teams such as Operations, Quality, R&D or Safety during project’s life cycle.
Required Qualifications
What do you bring?
Engineering Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
Minimum 10 years of experience in Engineering roles, preferred in capital equipment projects
Site experience: Operations or multiple projects execution
Strong fundamental knowledge of piping systems design and its application in an industrial continuous process manufacturing environment. Understanding of manufacturing methods and processes, including flow, layout, and assembly.
Ability to read all types of engineering plan drawings.
Experience with sizing, specifying, purchasing, and installing various pumps, fans, compressors, burners and related pipe and ductwork.
Experience with material handling system, including conveyors, packaging equipment and winders. Web handling experience would be ideal.
