The Role
The Senior Manager, Strategy & Operations role supports the Senior Director on the lead of the Trip Horizontal Products department on anything that it's required by them to run the business, including the core activities of its leadership team. At the core of the job is a deep understanding of product development and data, with the capability of both developing the department strategy and also underwriting delivery against that strategy.
This is done by combining four things: Developing a long-term strategy and financial trajectory for the department that is centered on the value that we deliver to the customer, while strongly connecting to company priorities, being operationally viable and financially relevant.
This involves analytics, market research and an understanding of product management, technical, business and delivery process constraints today and in the future Work closely with senior partners in each department and product group throughout the quarter to ensure that they are delivering on their accountabilities by both tracking performance and also understanding the detail of the work practically being done. This includes working closely with analytics teams to deliver tracking mechanisms, and working with team/group leaders to develop and embed appropriate processes and routines to deliver effectively against their objectives. Recommend to leadership where areas need more support. Recommend to leadership if/when any major change in prioritization is required. Think customer first by finding opportunities to improve the impact & experience for our customers (internal or external), partners and our business. Establish a productive working relationship between all the involved teams and functions to deliver against our strategy.
Responsible with limited to no supervision to define scope, kick-off, lead and implement every phase of initiatives related to the areas, specifically Create clear planning documents and roadmaps together with involved teams and department Implement the right level of control for the planned breakthroughs and make sure the eventual critical dependencies are highlighted and mitigated. Establish a proven governance routine which involves (Senior) management updates and reporting. Holds stakeholders and business partners accountable of next steps and objectives and proactively identifies risks and issues. Enables teams & leaders to make quality decisions and supports prioritization exercises.
Tasks & Responsibilities
Strategy: Develop long-term (3-5 year) strategies & plans for a business vertical including: overall macro-strategy vs. competitors Syncing the business vertical's strategy with booking's broader corporate objectives broad execution plans and multi-year workstreams required team shape over multiple years other investments needed build vs buy considerations (g) challenge to existing business models Developing and creating financial and operational models to validate feasibility and financial viability of various strategies and their impact on our business and our customers. Understand various strategies from top-line (volume/TTV) through to likely EBITDA impact. Work with UXR teams to collate market, competitor and customer research to advise these longer term plans and provide the basis of investment decisions, or explicit choices within those plans Develop multiple scenarios encompassing the above Work with all key partners across the business vertical (product, engineering, commercial, marketing, CS, legal, finance) to validate and challenge these plans and scenarios. Use influence and adjust the plans to get agreement and commitment to the ultimate recommendation Collaborate with key collaborators across the business vertical to translate the key elements of the long-term strategies into department level visions, roadmaps and goals (e.g. the three-year product strategy and evolution of the customer experience - (working with the Product Director) Aggregate & prioritize portfolio of actions to get to a result that best meets the company's objectives, including an assessment of the risks and opportunities in the plan Deliver a strategic recommendation to leadership, including a financial trajectory that the business is willing to commit to Work closely with FP&A to translate these strategic plans into tangible budgets and targets as part of the annual (and quarterly) planning cycle Work with stakeholders on an ad-hoc / project basis to tackle complex/strategic questions that the operating teams do not have the skills, analytical capability, or business context to address on their own (e.g. "should we be a 10% or 20% margin business?" or "how competitive do we really need to be vs. competitor X?"). Conduct structured and unstructured problem solving. Build ad-hoc business cases and financial models to analyze different options. Conduct workshops with stakeholders. Ultimately come to a recommendation. Support ad-hoc on any M&A activity that the BU is involved in, including working with Booking Holdings M&A team to build robust financial modelling supported by business cases Operations: Translate strategic plans and budget into tangible weekly/monthly operational plans for each department within the business vertical (product, tech, commercial, marketing) - working closely with FP&A. Ensure that this portfolio of plans over-achieves vs. the budget (i.e. accounts for delivery risk). Work with stakeholders in each area to get the plans signed off / committed to and to ensure maximum engagement and input into the plans Build tracking of key operational and financial metrics e.g. via automated dashboards Evaluate performance against these plans using a combination of (a) financial impact tracking (b) competitive/market analysis (c) operational metrics. Track this regularly e.g. fortnightly. Hold owners of each plan to account for progress. Work with stakeholders to adjust plans where we are falling short and/or reinforce where needed. Assess overall ROI / impact of mid-size and major projects and programs by using a combination of analytical techniques and business judgment Build recommendations for leadership where major adjustments or reprioritizations are required to hit the strategic objectives and/or financial commitments Work with FP&A to have a constantly updated view of likely financial outcomes each week/month/quarter. Work with FP&A to ensure that quarterly guidance reflects the reality of the work being done on the ground (effectively 'joining the dots' between financial planning and the business operation) and is therefore as accurate as possible Skills and Experience Educated to a MSc or MBA level 8-12 years in a similar area or role Experience building robust business strategies Demonstrated experience working with product management & Product Go To Market Financial modeling and commercial modeling is imperative Strategic portfolio management Solid understanding of key departments/functions (Product + Engineering, Marketing, UX/Design, Commercial, CS) Experience with program management and cross functional working Booking.com's Total Rewards Philosophy is not only about compensation but also about benefits.
