Purpose of Job:
As a key member of the Investment Solutions Team, the incumbent is responsible for contributing to the ongoing investment success of, and improvements to, the discretionary investment management platforms – Managed Portfolio Program (MPP), Scotia Investment Portfolios (SIP), Summit, and Fee Based Programs including Pinnacle, Partnership Plus and i:Partner. In addition, the incumbent will provide direct support to the ScotiaMcLeod channel and the sales team including portfolio construction, account transition to managed accounts and retention activities.
Major Accountabilities:
1. Work closely with the Director, Portfolio Management and Oversight in managing the day to day operations of Managed Asset and Fee Based Programs by:
Completing competitive analysis and reviews of managed and fee based programs
Developing business cases to support recommendations, leading and implementing projects designed to achieve business objectives, enhancing processes and improving the overall efficiency of managed programs.
Staying abreast of market conditions and regulatory changes that affect Advisors and Portfolio Managers
Providing communication, and on-going education and training. This will include hosting conference calls, creating content for training materials, newsletters, and webinars etc.
2. Support Managed Portfolio Program
Support advisors in all aspects of their MPP practice with a special focus on portfolio construction and adopting models
Investment Portfolio Construction support
Provide input on development of program management rules/supervision
Work with MPP oversight team to vet new applicants for Portfolio Manager or Associate Portfolio Manager designations
3. Provide recommendations, support and insight to ScotiaMcLeod Advisors on Managed Asset Programs and Fee Based Programs by:
Addressing questions, concerns and issues surrounding investment portfolio construction and management, manager selection, mandate and portfolio performance, rebalancing and account activities
Providing in-depth coaching and input for new Portfolio Managers as they transition into MPP.
4. Manage multiple interdependent relationships with the broader Fee Based Group, 1832, PIC, Operations, Compliance, vendors, portfolio advisors, Legal and consultants by:
Ensuring open communication and strong partnerships that benefit our Managed Asset Programs
Maintaining effective two-way communication pertaining to managed programs and developments
Influencing (without direct authority) partners and vendors to ensure the needs & initiatives of the Managed Asset and Fee Based Programs are being met
Maintain and oversee the documentation changes and enhancements
5. Contribute to the effective functioning of the Scotia Wealth Management Investment Solutions team by:
Building effective working relationships across the team and with various business line and corporate function contacts
Maintaining a high level of customer service
Facilitating a culture of open and honest communication
Actively participating and contributing to touch bases and team meetings
Encouraging the generation of new ideas and approaches
Actively sharing knowledge and experience to enhance the development of all team members
Developing and executing a meaningful employee development plan
Education/Work Experience/Designations
University degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience
CFA/CIM designation or equivalent education
Ability to become licensed as a Supervision Portfolio Manager (nice to have)
Detailed knowledge and understanding of capital markets, portfolio management, provincial and national securities regulations, mutual funds and the mutual fund industry
Minimum 5 years relevant experience in mutual fund, investment management or brokerage industry
Dimensions:
As a key member of the Investment Solutions team, the incumbent is responsible for the ongoing support of all fee-based programs, with a special focus on Managed Portfolio Program.Functional Competencies:
Highly developed PC skills and comfort with relevant industry software (MPower, Bloomberg, Zephyr, Morningstar Direct, MS Excel, Charles River etc.)
Significant comfort with and expertise in research methods and statistical analysis
Self-motivated and demanding environment
Able to work both independently and as part of a team
Strong ability to build and maintain key internal and external relationships
Strong oral and written communication skills
Well-developed presentation skills
Working Conditions:
Multiple competing demands
Required to work with multiple sources of data and multiple computer based analytical systems
Some irregular hours may be required from time to time
Travel may be required, though infrequent
