Position Description
Job Summary
CertainTeed is seeking a talented, and energetic senior-level process engineer to lead asphalt innovation research in a growing Roofing R&D team. This position will lead the asphalt process research group, focusing on providing innovative sustainable solutions to asphalt and polymer-modified asphalt materials for roofing applications. This position oversees technical development projects, supports existing formulations across the shingle plant network, and implements best practices at all roofing plants.
This position will lead the development and implementation of new processes, techniques & quality tools, which will be confirmed by applying engineering & material fundamentals and statistical tools. Phases of development include pilot, scale-up, and implementation of R&D new products and processes into manufacturing. The candidate will transform project objectives into actionable tasks including research of technologies, design and execution of experiments, analysis of results, and generation of IP and technical reports.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Lead the overall operations of the asphalt stills at each plant site with the support of plant engineers and operators
Lead the tech transfer of research and development activity in all aspects of the asphalt team and new product development
Serve as a technical process expert in asphalt science and oxidation optimization customized for each shingle plant
Develop and encourage innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) development and foster IP development through the patent process with legal support.
Prepare trial plans and provide technical support and assistance for trials, commissioning, and troubleshooting of new technology utilizing engineering tools and principles.
Responsible for thorough documentation and communication of projects, trial reports, scientific developments, etc.
Interact with asphalt or raw material planners, purchasing, R&D, engineering, and site plant management in support of supply chain forecasting, asphalt supply flexibility, and asphalt process optimization
Design, run experiments, operate pilot equipment, and analyze the experimental outcomes
Required Qualifications
BS Degree with a minimum of 15+ years’ experience, or MS with 10+ years of experience, or Ph.D. with 6+ years plus demonstrated technical judgment/accomplishments in Polymer Science Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other similar fields
Experience with asphalt oxidation is required
Knowledge of API standards, boiler operations, and asphalt process preferred.
Green or Black Belt Certification preferred
