Senior Director, ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance)

The Senior Director, ESG, as the head of a dynamic and growing ESG team, drives AbbVie’s ESG strategy, identifies and leads value-creating ESG-related opportunities to support the company’s long-term business sustainability, steers the company’s ESG Council, and leads ESG reporting and compliance. The Senior Director, ESG reports into the Vice President, Corporate Responsibility & Global Philanthropy.
Responsibilities:
Oversee and execute AbbVie’s enterprise ESG strategy and shape ESG priorities to meet the evolving needs AbbVie’s business and external stakeholders, including investors, employees, and patients; and oversee AbbVie’s enterprise ESG voluntary and mandatory reporting.
Lead the ESG Team—currently Director of ESG Reporting & Analytics and Director of ESG Strategy & Engagement and supporting vendors.
Manage and steer AbbVie’s ESG Council to foster effective decision making, information sharing, and recommendations to advance ESG actions and disclosures for the enterprise; and internal consulting support to senior and executive leadership to inform strategic choices on ESG-related opportunities.
Constantly monitor and analyze the internal and external environment to understand long term risks; evaluate opportunities that may unlock business value and develop business cases to support meaningful recommendations that accelerate innovative solutions, competitiveness, and business and societal impact across AbbVie’s ESG material areas to support business growth and sustainability.
Serve as the key point of contact for ESG engagement with investors, in partnership with Corporate Governance and Investor Relations, as well as trade associations and other external stakeholders on ESG-related topics.
Oversee AbbVie’s rater and ranker engagement strategy to ensure understanding of evolving methodologies, and strategically positive AbbVie’s disclosure and narrative to strengthen AbbVie’s ESG profile.
Collaborate closely with Corporate and Corporate Responsibility Communications teams to support impact storytelling across the enterprise and contribute to strengthening AbbVie’s reputation.
Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or other advanced degree in relevant field preferred (business strategy, sustainability, etc.).\
Minimum 15 years’ experience in positions of relevant experience- e.g., corporate affairs, business strategy, strategic consultant, corporate sustainability and/or strategy in the pharmaceutical and/or health care industry. Background in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) or sustainability a plus, but not required.
Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional teams, and successfully navigating highly matrixed business environments.
Strong business acumen, keen understanding of how to unlock value-creating opportunities and close gaps across a large corporation and demonstrated ability to make highly effective business cases for change.
Strong communications, critical thinking and interpersonal skills, strong ability to influence without authority, the ability to speak and write persuasively and with clarity, strong organizational skills, flexibility, and adaptability to changing requirements, resourcefulness and creativity, strong attention to detail, a proven track record of being able to work under deadlines and an ability to work collaboratively in a fluid organizational environment.
Well-honed political sensitivities and the utmost integrity while having the executive presence and acumen necessary to deal effectively with and anticipate the needs of high-profile stakeholders such as senior leaders, C-Suite, and a variety of external constituencies including investors, rating, and ranking agencies, and global ESG standard setters.
Must be an individual who works well in a team environment and enjoys working in a collegial, yet highly demanding culture. Must be able to work collaboratively with senior business leaders and other internal stakeholders across the enterprise.
