Massachusetts was the first state in the nation to combine energy and environmental agencies under one Cabinet secretary. The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EOEEA) serves Commonwealth residents interested in outdoor recreational activities, clean energy solutions and those who work with animals and livestock. Equally, EOEEA works with energy consumers, power companies, clean energy providers and farmers to delicately balance the interaction with environmental protection laws and regulations while being a cornerstone for our economic prosperity.
EEA is seeking a talented Senior Data Engineer to lead a highly complex Data Centric system development. The ideal candidate must have prior experience working with data centric applications and business reporting while working with large and complex datasets. The Senior Data Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of a data analytical platform that will require data cleansing and developing a complex business intelligence model using data visualization and predictive modeling techniques.
The Senior Data Engineer will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing data accuracy, automating data collection and processing, data modeling, building data visualization tools, dashboards, and reports. The ideal candidate must conduct thorough business requirements analysis to understand and develop technical models to provide sustainable and scalable solutions to meet business needs.
The primary work location for this role is 100 Cambridge Street, Boston, MA, 02114. The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 9:00AM to 5:00PM EST. This position would be expected to follow a hybrid work model that combines in-office workdays and work-from-home days as needed. *Schedules are subject to change based on the operational needs of the business.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Design, implement, and maintain scalable and efficient data pipelines, data warehouses, and ETL processes.Integrate data from multiple sources, including multiple databases, real-time data, third party data, etc.Perform data cleansing, preprocessing and transformation of data into data models and ready for data analytics and reporting.Optimize ETL processes and manage data flows, queries for performance, scalability, and reliability.Develop and maintain data models that fit into business needs, ensuring accuracy and integrity and utilize industrial tools to perform data analytics and business reports.Develop and refine predictive models that can be used to make informed decisions; ability to work with machine learning algorithms to analyze data is a plus.Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for data flows, data processes and data models and must be able to collect, store and associate different data models from different data sources.Collaborate across multiple development teams, business agencies and programs to gather data and business needs.Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in data engineering, propose and apply them to improve data infrastructure.Use statistical methods and data visualization tools to analyze data, identify trends and patterns and create reports, graphs, and other visualizations to present and explain data to business. Work with business users and technical teams to research, understand, and document technical specifications using common tools such as JIRA, VISIO, SharePoint, MS Office Suite.Ability to break down complex business requirements and provide solutions with high visibility and impact for the business.Ability to work independently as well as part of a data team in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
At least 6 (six) years of relevant hands-on experience in a Business Intelligence domain working as a Data Engineer.Excellent skills in data collection and transformation using SQL, Python as well as analytical tools such as Power BI or Tableau.Experience with big data technologies and data pipelines such as Hadoop, Spark, Airflow, etc.Experience working with multiple database platforms such as SQL Server, Oracle, Mongo or No-SQL.Excellent problem-solving skills, possess great attention to detail, and oral/verbal/written communication skills.Proficient in programming languages like Python, R, C# is a plus.
Education and Certifications:
BS and/or MS in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.Certification in Business Data Analytics preferred, but not required.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have (A) at least four years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional experience performing related duties that include business data recovery, analysis, query design, reporting and statistical analysis; or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below.
Substitutions:
I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics or a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience
II. A Master's degree or higher with a major in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics or a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience
