The Hartford is seeking an experienced litigator for a Senior Counsel in the Coverage Unit within the Litigation Group. The Senior Counsel will join a team managing coverage litigation and pre-litigation disputes stemming from our Property & Casualty and Global Specialty Claims organizations. This Senior Counsel will provide coverage and other legal advice to internal clients and will be expected to exercise outstanding judgment, independently handle complex coverage and claim scenarios, and present strategic recommendations to senior legal, claims and business leaders. This role will have a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in our Hartford, CT Home Office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Responsibilities:
Deliver comprehensive and strategic coverage and legal advice and training to internal clients, with limited supervision, with an emphasis on auto, property and general liability claims, including bodily injury liability and uninsured/underinsured motorist claims, and general property insurance, catastrophic loss, and business interruption claims.Achieve favorable, cost-effective resolutions in disputes with policyholders and other carriers, including pursuit of appropriate risk transfer, allocation, and contribution opportunities.Seek out opportunities to improve legal and financial outcomes, claim behaviors, and internal/external processes.Select and manage competent outside counsel and litigation vendors, and manage costs and budgets.Partner with outside counsel in day-to-day case management, including implementation of effective settlement, mediation, arbitration, and ADR strategies.Collaborate with paralegal and administrative staff on document retrieval and production, file maintenance, and day to day case management tasks.Communicate effectively with senior clients and law department colleagues and managers, providing timely updates on significant case developments and changes to the broader legal environment.
Qualifications:
Minimum of five years of litigation practice experience; experience with insurance coverage litigation strongly preferred; experience with auto, property and/or general liability claims preferred.Litigation experience within national or regional law firm preferred; experience in a similar litigation role within a Fortune 200 company law department considered.Ability to build strong, strategic partnerships with business clients in claims, as well as partners in underwriting and other parts of the Company.Superior writing, editing, and oral communication skills.Collaborative, team-oriented work style, with strong interpersonal skills; excellent work ethicStrong judgment and ability to make independent decisions when appropriate.Demonstrated proficiency with Lexis-Nexis, Internet research, and Microsoft Office suite (MS Word, Outlook, and Excel).J.D. required; member of Connecticut bar or member of any state bar and willingness to become admitted to Connecticut bar.Able and willing to travel up to 10% of the time.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
