The Hartford is seeking an experienced litigator as Senior Counsel, Coverage Unit, within the Litigation Group. The Senior Counsel will join a team managing coverage litigation and pre-litigation disputes arising out of latent bodily injury claims. The focus of the work will be on coverage disputes arising from the company’s legacy bodily injury claims under general liability policies, including asbestos, toxic tort, sexual molestation and abuse, and concussion claims, among others. This Senior Counsel will provide coverage and other legal advice to internal clients handling these claims. The Senior Counsel will be expected to independently develop sophisticated strategic recommendations involving complex factual scenarios, and high-exposure claims and present strategic recommendations to senior legal, claim and business leaders. This role will have a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in our Hartford, CT Home Office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Responsibilities:
Provide comprehensive, responsive, and timely legal advice and training to internal clients on coverage disputes emanating from complex and high exposure liability claims, and on general litigation topics, with limited supervision
Manage coverage litigation arising from latent bodily injury claims. Underlying claims will include asbestos, toxic tort, opioids, sexual molestation and abuse, and concussion injuries, among others
Vigorously pursue cost-effective, proactive, and favorable resolutions to coverage disputes with policyholders
Seek out opportunities to improve legal and financial outcomes, claim behaviors, or internal/external processes
Select and manage competent and cost-effective outside counsel and other litigation vendors
Manage costs associated with outside counsel and other litigation or pre-litigation activities as effectively as possible
Partner effectively with outside counsel in day-to-day case manage implementation of settlement, mediation, arbitration, or other alternative dispute resolution strategies
Supervise paralegals with respect to document retrieval and production, file maintenance, and other case management tasks
Communicate effectively with senior clients and law department management on significant developments, both on individual cases and the broader legal environment.
Qualifications:
Minimum of five years of litigation practice experience; experience with insurance coverage litigation required; third party liability coverage experience is a plus; experience with latent bodily injury cases preferred
At least three years of litigation experience within national or regional law firm or experience in a responsible litigation position within a company law department
Ability to build strong, strategic partnerships with business clients in Claims, as well as partners in underwriting and other parts of the Company
Superior writing, editing, and oral communication skills
Collaborative, team-oriented work style, with strong interpersonal skills; excellent work ethic
Strong judgment and ability to make independent decisions when appropriate
Demonstrated proficiency with Lexis-Nexis, Internet research, and Microsoft Office suite (MS Word, Outlook, and Excel)
J.D. required; member of Connecticut bar or member of any state bar and willingness to become admitted to Connecticut bar
Able and willing to travel up to 10% of the time
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
