POSITION PURPOSE
Provide technology support for novel projects related to computational linguistics, pedagogy and computational linguistics, particularly for less commonly taught and Indigenous languages. Help support for grant program applications and management. Assist with language research and curricular development projects. Work directly with faculty and staff to provide direct department language technology support and training. Develop plans and budgets for future technology developments. Given project goals, outline technology projects, and manage to completion. Manage the technology inventory for the center, including purchasing. A demanding part of this job is working with technology and pedagogy to maximally support the four dozen different languages that are taught on this campus, as well as off-campus partners in accordance with the mission of the center and the university. The computing environment served by this position is complex along several dimensions—computer hardware (complex both by age and by manufacturer), computer software specialized for many applications, and technology support which varies from non-existent to highly developed. The employee must judiciously blend central standards and guidelines with local expertise and requirements to create an environment that is stable, reliable, and yet provides flexible service for those who need specialized applications. The scope of the position responsibilities may vary considerably from project to project, and it requires being able to rapidly adapt to changing goals and contexts. Along with the technical challenges of the position, equally important is the ability to interact with clients diplomatically, often intensely, on matters such as uniquely idiosyncratic technological and pedagogical needs, and the ability to complete work under pressure. Given the large number of international instructors, good cross-cultural communication is an essential component of the position. Resources for position complexities include University central and College staff, Internet resources, local departmental expertise, and some amount of training.
