POSITION PURPOSE The Paul G. The Academic Counselor- Senior will work with a wide variety of students. The Allen School is competitive, with over 800 current UW student applicants last year and over 500 transfer students. The Academic Counselor- Senior will meet with current and prospective students facing personal and academic challenges, and must be knowledgeable on how to interact with these students and how to provide referrals for these situations appropriately. The Allen School is dedicated to being a welcoming place for all students, so the person in this position must be able to interact with students from all backgrounds in a warm and professional manner.
In addition, this position manages all processes related to current students that have transferred to the Allen School in addition to the advising responsibilities of an academic counselor. For current transfer students at the Allen School, the academic counselor senior leads and facilitates all transfer advising and orientations, organizes and teaches the CSE 390T transfer student seminar two quarters per academic year, and provides ongoing programming for these students through degree completion. As the Allen School continues to grow, an academic counselor senior must continue to adapt to the growing and changing needs of the students served in order to provide the best possible experience for all students.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Advising & Student Services:
Current student advising: meet with students for schedule and degree planning, explain CSE and UW requirements, check satisfactory progress, address general questions and concerns; help students find UW and department resources and opportunities.
New student orientation: help facilitate CSE orientation for new majors; arrange make-up orientations; meet with new students to plan courses and discuss application; attend summer registration sessions and advise newly admitted students on courses;
Assist students with special requests and situations: write letters to confirm enrollment or graduation; approve UW satisfactory progress petitions; update student records; approve degree requirement exceptions.
Work with faculty regarding course enrollment, management of struggling students, and other special requests and situations.
Update and maintain departmental websites and materials.
Recruitment: Represent the school at events; help facilitate activities and presentations for visitors; assist with Admitted Student Day.
Keep informed of university, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Engineering policies. Departmental Program Management:
Lead all current transfer student-focused programming, including organization of the Allen School’s participation in UW-wide transfer student events, transfer student advising and orientation, and the instruction of the Allen School’s CSE 390T transfer seminar course during the autumn and spring quarters of each academic year.
Maintain appropriate records and databases regarding transfer admissions.
Participate on external transfer advising groups including the UW/CC Advising Conference and other UAA transfer initiatives.
Participate on the CSE Scholarship Committee: Read and discuss scholarship applications from current majors; help decide allocation of funds. Administrative Duties:
Facilitate undergraduate programs and services
Monitor and respond to daily emails and online chat questions; take drop-in appointments and phone calls, assist with management of the CSE Ed discussion board.
Website maintenance: Update pages to keep information accurate and clear; create new web pages to provide specific resources, including pages for the Advice from Current Students, Course Planning for Career Paths, Advice for; Alumni Profiles; an online version of our information session; etc. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s Degree in related field, and at least three years of Student Counseling, Student Services, or related experience Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Desire and ability to work with diverse student populations
Familiarity with UW systems, policies, and structure.
Experience working with a highly competitive university program.
