  Description of Work Unit

  The Energy Institute is operated under the Office of the Vice President for Research ( OVPR ) at Colorado State University. The Institute builds on the long history of work in energy at CSU and is intended to foster greater collaboration among energy faculty across all eight colleges, with broad access to facilities for faculty and industry partners. The Institute conducts research, education, commercialization and outreach activities for the entire CSU campus. Also, the Institute operates two facilities; the Powerhouse Energy Campus, and METEC , both of which provide safe, secure, and sophisticated facilities for university investigators and industry partners to collaboratively develop clean energy solutions. This position may be split between Powerhouse campus (office / laboratory environment) and METEC (an industrial working environment).

  Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.   Position Summary

  The CSU Energy Institute includes the Zimmerle Research Group, one of the leading research groups for emissions from oil and natural gas (O&G) operations, from production through distribution and end use. The group operates the leading test site for assessing leak detection methods – theMethane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center( METEC ),does field measurement of emissions from O&G, waste and other anthropogenic sources, and develops software for stochastic emissions simulation. The CSU Energy Institute Research Scientist I, II, or III positions will lead one or more related research projects in the group, potentially including field work to assess emissions at a variety of locations, analysis of data, and/or the development of simulation software. The position will interface with customers and other research groups engaged in collaborative projects.

  Positions may become available throughout the year. Ranking and qualification within the levels are done on a case-by-case basis with factors that include the complexity of research and specialized skills. Annual terms and reappointment may depend on performance and/or continued availability of funding.

  The successful candidate will build strong and positive working relationships with staff, unit directors, researchers, campus faculty and administrators, as well as external community and business partners as required by the project. Occasional travel and working non-standard hours are expected. The CSU Energy Institute Research Scientist I, II, or III positions will support other organizational priorities, as defined by the Director of the Methane Emissions ( METEC ) Program and Remote and Distributed Energy Center ( RADEC ).

  Required Job Qualifications

  Research Scientist Iis for individuals with a PhD and less than 3 years of relevant professional experience.

  Research Scientist IIis for individuals with a PhD and 3-7 years of relevant professional experience.

  Research Scientist III is for individuals with a PhD and more than 7 years of relevant professional experience.

  PhD in Mechanical, Systems, Electrical, or Environmental Engineering, or in Atmospheric Sciences, or related physical sciences field.

  Demonstrated experience configuring laboratory equipment and using it in experimental methods.

  Experience with stochastic modeling methods, particularly large-scale Monte Carlo simulation and associated statistical methods.

  Experience acquiring, analyzing, and doing quality control on large data sets, including statistical analyses.

  Strong background in software for data acquisition and analysis.

  Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.

  Demonstrated experience working productively within a research group.

  Prior experience successfully managing external customers, sponsors, research relationships, or similar critical relationships.

  Successful candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States by time of application; CSU Energy Institute will not provide visa sponsorship for these positions. Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

  Preferred Job Qualifications

  Prior experience working with O&G operators in any segment of the industry.

  High level of computer mastery in scientific programming using MatLab, Python and/or GIS .

  Demonstrated experience constructing complex electro-mechanical assemblies for laboratory or field equipment.

  Prior experience working in a multi-university collaborative environment.

  Prior experience in near-field atmospheric phenomena, including dispersion, emissions transport, sampling and measurement methods.
