  Research Scholars Training at HHMI

In 2021, HHMI announced a long-term commitment to advancing DEI goals through continued support of existing efforts as well as new initiatives. One of the newer initiatives is to create a research training program for individuals interested in gaining experience and training in biomedical research. The goal of the HHMI Research Scholars Training Program is to support diversity within the scientific workforce. This will be done by providing biomedical research training opportunities where recent graduates (including associate and bachelor's degree earners) and science education faculty can further their development as scientists and prepare for next steps in their scientific career.

Core programmatic components of the HHMI Research Scholars Training Program will include:

Access to research opportunities in HHMI labs for recent graduates and science education faculty who have had limited access to such opportunities during their science careers.Engagement of HHMI scientists and labs to provide supportive and inclusive training environments.Support of the research scholars as they successfully transition to the next steps in their scientific career (including but not limited to biomedical PhD programs).

The Program Lead is the principal connection between the Research Scholars Training Program and its participants. They assist the participants in understanding the goals of the initiative, manage participant engagement in program activities, assess the participant progress, and will help evaluate program outcomes.

In addition to leadership of this program, the Program Lead will support the development of new equity-centered partnerships and provide ideas and perspectives to other Center initiatives. The Center is actively seeking and cultivating collaborations with leaders across the scientific ecosystem to address systemic inequities and design new models for science engagement and outreach.
