Representative Payee Specialist
Reports to: Assistant Director of Finance
Location: 1603 Court Street, Syracuse NY 13208
Full-Time: Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm
Salary: $17.50 - $19.50 DOE

Working closely with the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities and the Office of Mental Health, we support 27 housing locations and 3 administrative buildings.
About the Role
We are looking for a proactive employee to be primarily responsible for managing Social Security Representative Payee functions for our residential participants.
Responsibilities include:
Manage participant funds in accordance with Social Security Guidelines.
Alert Care Coordinators and Site Managers when participants’ total assets are approaching the allowable limit.
Assist the Corporate Compliance team with the Internal Audit process around participants’ personal funds as necessary; prepare audit forms and any other paperwork in advance; compile summarized audit results.
Visit all participants’ residences to provide training to Program Managers on financial issues as deemed necessary.
Liaison with governmental units (Social Security, OPWDD, Medicaid, etc.), banks, family members, participants, etc. regarding participant income, expenses, taxes, and all other financial issues.
Education & Experience
Associate’s degree in Accounting or Business plus one years’ experience preferred; or three (3) years’ experience in a similar role plus High School Diploma or GED required. Microsoft Excel, Word, and basic computer skills required. Experience with Medicaid regulations and Social Security (SSA/SSI/SSP) regulations highly preferred. Experience with a Representative Payee Services software platform (such as RPM) preferred.
Scope of Responsibility:
With regular supervision, use own experience and judgment to carry out the Agency mission and assist with the day-to-day operation of the Finance Department. Work must be performed in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, generally accepted accounting practices, and Agency policies. Prepares items in order of priority. Position involves access to confidential information that must be respected. Contact with the public is service-specific.
Conditions of Employment
Must be an effective communicator over the telephone and through written correspondence. Must have a valid NYS driver’s license and transportation necessary to meet departmental needs. Travel among the multiple residential sites is required. Must respect confidentiality. Must have a moderately flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of participants.
