The Savannah Morning News/savannahnow.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a dynamic and digitally savvy journalist to lead our Savannah Life/Trending Topics coverage.
What inimitable qualities make Savannah and the surrounding coastal Georgia region such an interesting and vibrant place to call home? Is it the food with its roots in Gullah Geechee culture? Is it the burgeoning artistic community that pioneers fading neighborhoods? Is it the confluence of marsh and blackwater rivers with the Atlantic Ocean? Is it the history meets modernity? Is it all of the above and more?
Coastal Georgia with Savannah as its cornerstone is one of the fastest growing areas of the state and country, driven by a growing manufacturing base, the in-migration of residents from large cities as well as international capitals, and a vibrant and diverse college population. Yet, beneath the moss-laden oaks and the historic facades, there are pressures: conflicts between the needs of residents and the demands of tourists, one of Savannah's top economic engines. As the Port of Savannah expands its footprint and alters the landscape, the cost of housing rises, and neighborhood integrity is challenged.
The Savannah Life/Trending Topics reporter's role in the newsroom is to explore the intersections of urban design and the economy; a burgeoning food scene amid persistent food insecurity; a vibrant live music scene alongside cultural arts organizations seeking support and space; the arts community's collective push to emerge as a national and regional hub for contemporary artists. This reporter will capture the zeitgeist of Savannah in this moment while looking for trends that speak to where Savannah and its surrounding communities are headed in the future.
