General Information
The in which the School of Media Arts and Design (
SMAD) is located, enrolls more than 3,100 undergraduate majors and about 150 graduate students across ten academic units in the humanities, social sciences, and communication studies. Home to several interdisciplinary centers and institutes, the College employs 270 full-time faculty. We embrace the teacher-scholar model and encourage excellent applicants within our particular disciplines, as well as scholars and teachers eager to work across them.
SMAD invites applications for a Renewable Term Appointment (
RTA) in the rank of Lecturer beginning in August 2024.Interdisciplinarity is a
SMAD hallmark. SMAD's distinctive undergraduate major has four concentrations: Creative Advertising, Digital Video and Cinema, Interactive Design, and Journalism. Each empowers students to use mass media as a vehicle for storytelling.
SMAD provides one of the finest media production facilities in the country offering instructional workspaces for creating video, audio, graphics, animation, websites, and apps. The School has about 700 undergraduate majors and more than 20 faculty members, who represent a blend of professional and academic interests. All

Duties and Responsibilities
SMAD seeks a student-oriented colleague to join our Journalism Concentration and teach some combination of sports media, journalism, and
SMAD foundation courses. In addition, our new colleague will provide leadership in further developing sports media coursework and will mentor students engaged in covering sports. Drawing upon expertise and professional experience in sports journalism, the colleague will collaborate with faculty in JMU's interdisciplinary Sport Communication Minor and interact with the marketing and media production staffs of
JMU Athletics. The colleague also will work with external partners in the regional sports media community to develop internships and other initiatives. Students at
JMU, an
NCAA Division I member of the Sunbelt Conference, have extensive opportunities to cover athletes competing in 18 varsity sports.
Qualifications
A master's degree is required, or a bachelor's degree with substantial professional experience in sports media. Teaching experience is preferred.
