The Environmental & Sustainability Programs department engages in environmentally responsible business practices to reduce Publix’s impact on the environment while conserving natural resources and ensuring economic stewardship for our stockholders. Within the department, the Refrigeration and PFAS Programs Manager oversees the regulatory programs and projects focused on required chemical reporting, recordkeeping, testing, and other restrictions related to certain chemical substances and mixtures.
Additional responsibilities include:
managing Retail Refrigeration and Comfort Cooling regulatory programs and acting as SME for all EPA refrigerant regulations involving ozone depleting substances and refrigerants with high global warming potential
managing the anhydrous ammonia and gaseous chlorine process safety and risk management programs and acting as SME for Clean Air Act Section 112(r) regulations regarding chemical accident prevention programs
developing, managing, and improving the new per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) compliance programs
evaluating the need for compliance program related projects in response to federal, state, and local regulatory changes or significant operational changes affecting applicable environmental programs

Year End Bonus:
As a year-end bonus to associates, Publix issues one month’s extra pay (pro-rated in the first year) each year if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check that year. This is calculated as a 13th month of pay in the Potential Annual Pay with Bonus line above.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in an Environmental or Occupational Health & Safety field such as Environmental Science, Health & Safety, or equivalent experience
at least two years of experience managing projects and programs related to environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, or equivalent
in depth knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding applicable regulatory programs
ability to understand new and complex issues, help develop initiatives and goals, and effectively execute strategy
verbal and written communication skills
decision making and problem-solving skills

high degree of self-motivation, commitment, and integrity
a general knowledge of government agencies and how permitting programs work

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in in either Business Administration or Environmental Science
four or more years of experience managing projects and programs related to environmental compliance and industrial hygiene
Registered Environmental Manager (REM), Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or Professional Engineer or Geologist (PE or PG)
knowledge of all Publix operations and applicable activities across retail, manufacturing, warehousing, and support
knowledge of Publix’s overall strategic direction
knowledge of Publix’s business processes related to environmental work
advanced skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, and SharePoint
advanced skills with Federal, State, local, and internal regulatory database systems
