What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a manager to lead the Z Machine High Hazard Operations Department. This department resides in the Z Experimental Capability Management Group within the Pulsed Power Sciences Center and supports a diverse breadth of experimental research, development, and applications in support of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Stockpile Stewardship Program.
We are responsible for operation and stewardship of Z’s High Hazard Operations which consists of teams working around and/or managing Beryllium, Tritium, Plutonium, Chemicals, and Radioactive Material. A key aspect of this work focuses on addressing the evolving challenges of running the facility, understanding, and implementing changes to rules and regulations around working with hazardous materials. Your position will include being an integral member of the Group 1670 leadership team and the broader Center-management team, collectively supporting the overall management and operation of Z and advancing its capabilities and usage into the future.
Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:
Management of the personnel in the organization by fostering a diverse work environment and ensuring a culture that promotes safety and security.
Recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment, and work assignments of personnel in the organization.
Leading the organization with sustainable impact through a common vision, staff development, and strong teaming with collaborators.
Provide leadership to Tritium and Plutonium Operations.
Management of activity level work in the Z Facility.
Manager on Call. The Manager on Call acts as the primary manager of Z operations associated with tasks and facility needs that can impact shot execution during typical Z daytime operational hours (i.e., 6 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Qualifications We Require:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant STEM field plus 12 years’ experience; or Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in a relevant STEM field plus eight years’ experience
Experience with coordinating or managing activity-level work in a laboratory setting with large-scale, high hazard operations.
Leadership experience as demonstrated by serving as a project manager, principal investigator, or prior management experience.
Active DoE Q clearance

About Our Team:
The Z Mission Assurance, Execution, and Analytics Department, is a diverse, interdisciplinary team dedicated to ensuring the operational readiness, execution, and system-level analysis for High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) campaigns at Sandia National Laboratories Z Machine.
