About Radiological Technician

  Radiological Technician will provide x-ray services in a clinic setting. Performs radiographic procedures and other functions related to the production of x-rays of accurate and diagnostic radiographs for interpretation by a licensed practitioner. Exercises professional judgment throughout the performance of his/her duties and maintains a demeanor that supports the values and mission of the client. Contributes and functions as a cohesive member of the unit, ensuring that all interaction with patients, physicians, nurses, administrators and other members of the staff are professional and in accordance with the established guidelines of the institution. Performs procedures in compliance with NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP)standards and the principals of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).

  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  1. Care provided is patient centered. Actively contributes to creating a friendly, welcoming and safe environment for patients. Communicates clearly to ensure understanding. Responds to complaints and concerns by resolving issues immediately whenever possible. Interacts with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the plan of care is coordinated. Meets or exceeds patient/family expectations for service. Maintains professional composure and confidence in the care setting. Demonstrates respect for patient rights and is committed to the uniqueness of the individual patient.

  2. Performs diagnostic radiographic procedures. Explains the exam to the patient according to age-specific needs to gain cooperation, minimize anxiety and optimize desired results. Selects appropriate protocol and technique for exam. Positions and images patients according to approved departmental protocols. Determines proper and satisfactory radiographic technique exposure factors. Verifies informed consent where required. Scan and access patient record via Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archive Communications System (PACS). Access images for review on the computed Radiography (CR) and from PACS. Add externally obtained images to PACS.

  3. Contributes to quality assurance established by the department and the institution. Demonstrates knowledge of manipulating images to enhance image quality. Changes image orientation and alternate text position according to departmental protocol. Demonstrates knowledge of accepting, deleting, assigning, and re-assigning images in PACS. Ensures that unassigned images are completed and re-routes images that are already distributed according to departmental protocol. Cleans touch screens, cassettes as needed. Uses bar code on cassettes to correctly correlate the correct cassette with the correct image. Immediately reports on all quality performance concerns to the Medical Director. Complies with all requirements for accrediting agencies including the NJ DEP and The Joint Commission by participating in improving quality within the department.

  4. Practices radiation safety and protection. Follows radiology department protocol to start up equipment. Practices radiation protection by employing principles of time, distance and shielding for patient and self. Correctly positions x-ray tube for each projection. Utilizes immobilization devices, lead shielding, and collimation as appropriate. Operates fluoroscopy tower and ensures the use of fluoroscopic controls as per departmental guidelines. Ensures that machines are functional according to manufacturer specification before use. Adheres to and assures that Radiation Safety practices for patient, self, and others are in compliance with NJ DEP standards and the principals of ALARA.

  5. Ensures that the correct patient receives the correct test(s). Follows protocol by using two identifiers: patient name and date of birth for outpatients and patient name and medical record number for inpatients. Scans all documentation with patient identifiers, including but not limited to the Radiology Order Form and prescriptions, into the PACS system before completing the exam. Ensures that all exams are in completed and verified status in RIS and PACS. Evaluates radiographs or images for technical quality, assuring proper identification is recorded.

  6. Safe patient handling Uses safe patient handling techniques when moving patients. Uses safe patient handling equipment, approved by Environmental & Occupational Health and Safety Services, when moving patients. Recognizes when other are in need of assistance and offer help when appropriate.

  7. Assumes responsibility for assigned area and equipment. Maintains and cleans equipment on an on-going basis with manufacturer approved cleaning agents. Reports equipment problems to the supervisor of the clinic for follow-up. Maintains and controls all inventory supplies in assigned area to ensure that adequate levels are available. Provides input for equipment purchase and supply decisions on an ongoing basis.

  8. Teamwork- Cooperates and works well with clinic staff members. Cooperates with management to work towards Institute's goals and objectives. Participates in the training of new staff, residents and students as appropriate. Provides feedback to others in a courteous and respectful manner. Contributes to harmonious working relationship by dealing with conflicts in a constructive manner. Cooperates with reassignments in the interest of patient care and departmental needs. Works beyond the scheduled shifts to complete work in an emergency situation. Provides practical instruction for students and/or other healthcare professionals. Pursues appropriate continuing education in related fields as noted through proper certification and documentation. Provide back up for receptionist by answering telephone calls and scheduling appointments.

  9. Understands and adheres to compliance standards as they appear in Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.

  JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed must be representative of the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or ability required. Must possess a current NJ Department of Environmental Protection Diagnostic Radiography license and current ARRT certification. One (1) year of experience in Diagnostic Radiology preferred and work with young children. Computer literacy. The successful candidate will maintain valid certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR. The individual must be able to pass a medical evaluation and a respirator fit test and wear an N95 particulate filter respirator mask in accordance with PEOSHA standards as a condition of employment. Credential required: NJDEP Licenses & ARRT Primary source verification: NJDEP and ARRT; Tabb, Inc. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to lift up to twenty (20) pounds. Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time while wearing a lead apron and other protective apparatus. Must possess good manual dexterity and good hearing acuity. This position requires sitting under 1/3 of the time, use of hands to finger, handle, or feel to 2/3 of the time, reach with hands and arms under 1/3 of the time, stooping, crawling, kneeling, crouching under 1/3 of the time, talking or hearing more than 2/3 of the time. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic).
