The Public Health Nurse Practitioner provides specialized nursingservices in the area of correctional health care, family planning,communicable and sexually transmitted diseases; does related work asrequired. An employee in this classification is responsible forproviding specialized nursing services requiring considerable medicaljudgment to determine appropriate procedure within scope of practice.Nurse Practitioner requires an advanced level of competency in nursingthrough additional education/training as well as a Nurse Practitioner\'slicense. Work is performed under the direction of the Nursing ProgramManager who reviews work primarily on the basis of results attained,case conferences and evaluation of progress on established annual goals.Although supervision is not normally a responsibility of positions inthis classification, incumbents may be responsible for overseeing thework of and providing technical nursing instructions toAssociate/Bachelor Degree in Nursing students in clinical settings.Typical Daily Tasks (Illustrative Only. Theseduties represent the essential functions needed of persons in thisclassification.) 1. Obtains and records client\'s health history;performs complete physical examinations. 2. Diagnoses, treats and plansappropriate health care for clients; consults with supervisor, PublicHealth Officer or other physicians as required; refers clients tophysicians and/or outside agencies as appropriate. 3. Provides andprescribes medication within areas of specialty. 4. Counsels/instructspatients in preventative health care, health education and familyplanning. 5. Schedules additional lab procedures and interprets lab testresults. 6. Establishes and maintains client medical charts and othernecessary records; prepares reports related to departmental programs andac-tivities. 7. Drafts and recommends departmental policies andprocedures. 8. Other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESIncumbents may be responsible for overseeing the work of and providingtechnical nursing instructions to Associate/bachelor\'s degree Nurses inclinical settings.
