Job Overview
NYSERDA seeks a creative, self-motivated, and knowledgeable individual to be responsible for energy sector modeling and analyses, with a focus on the buildings sector. The selected candidate should have strong quantitative analysis, energy sector modeling, and communication skills as well as project management experience.
This position will support energy market analysis and tracking of alternative energy market trends as part of the Energy Markets team within. The Energy Markets program monitors the State of New York’s energy supply, evaluates energy workforce trends, and supports broader NYSERDA efforts to transition away from natural gas and other fossil fuels. This position will also support intelligence gathering around conventional and alternative energy and the current state of energy markets in New York, supporting energy preparedness and comprehensive situational awareness of energy supply, pricing, and evolving market dynamics. This position will feature ongoing internal collaboration with NYSERDA teams along with external coordination with the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS) and utilities across the state.
Primary Responsibilities
Assess energy market price trends, price, and use forecasts, supply-demand dynamics, and potential fuel supply infrastructure constraints that would require government response.
Provide market intelligence on alternative fuels, especially hydrogen and bioenergy, and evaluate their potential role in decarbonizing New York’s economy.
Help conceptualize and perform data analyses summarizing trends and modeling impacts for both internal and external stakeholders. Translate modeling results into clear visual representations.
Support essential NYSERDA deliverables, including the State Energy Plan, potential studies, and other major projects intended to deliver on the state’s energy and climate goals.
Support ongoing pricing surveys for delivered heating fuels across New York
Contribute to energy emergency preparedness in collaboration with the Energy Resilience and Emergency Preparedness team
Apply knowledge of energy systems infrastructures, reliability requirements, and market dynamics to inform policy or project formation, and to represent NYSERDA at various forums to provide expert knowledge of New York State system requirements or desired policy outcomes.
Serve as an energy systems expert resource to NYSERDA workforce, energy efficiency and renewable energy program staff and provide information and insight to help inform the development of clean energy programs.
Manage external contractor teams engaged in analysis on behalf of NYSERDA as well as participate in and lead teams from NYSERDA and other State agencies to advance projects.
Support tracking of metrics and reporting on accomplishments
Periodically serve as mentor to student interns or program support staff
Perform other responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
5 years of relevant experience in energy, utilities, or other related fields
A bachelor’s degree in economics, public administration, or a related field
Demonstrated experience applying modeling and analytic tools across a variety of energy sectors
High fluency in Microsoft Excel, experience with SQL programming and other data management tools
Proven ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, holding sometimes conflicting perspectives, to seek feedback, input and identify common objectives
Demonstrated abilities for problem-solving, resourcefulness, adaptability, and pragmatic solutions
Skill in managing multiple diverse activities simultaneously, operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment
Strong work ethic and integrity
Proven presentation and interpersonal skills that resonate with audiences of different backgrounds and the ability to communicate accurately, persuasively, concisely, and unambiguously in speech and in writing
Preferred Qualifications
A master’s degree in a relevant field
Experience with New York State’s regulatory environment and energy system
Experience and background in building electrification, efficiency, and decarbonization
Knowledge of energy system databases such as NEMS
Experience in reporting, storytelling, and data visualization technologies such as Tableau, Shiny, Bokeh
Experience with data warehouse design and development
Familiarity with New York’s Climate Act and decarbonization targets
