The team you will be a part of
The Engineering team discovers, develops and evaluates new product ideas, enhancements, or strategic product extensions, and translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products. Leads, plans and tracks all phases of the product life cycle, from inception to introduction into the marketplace. Coordinates with various functions to ensure successful product development and implementation.
This role in summary
As part of the Global Product Organisation we are looking for a Project Engineer to be responsible for the design of electronic and electromechanical solutions and sub-systems for tumble-dryers. Based in the manufacturing facility in Yate, North Bristol that produces dryers for Whirlpool EMEA which are distributed around the world under the Company’s main brands of Indesit & Hotpoint. Design work is identified within NPI, Cost Reduction and Quality Improvement Projects.
Engineer specialist with project experience in electrical component, electronic solutions or product thermodynamic or mechanical component development would be preferred.
Responsible for the creation of performance and investigation reports of new and existing dryers, and reviewing them with Senior colleagues. Organizing safety testing such clause 19 responsible. In addition to generating the designs using CREO CAD/Windchill PDM systems, the project engineer is also required to support prototyping, tooling and ultimately the introduction of new products and design changes that seamlessly move into production.
Your responsibilities will include
Quality
Identify and implement design solutions to improve product reliability
Identify and implement design solutions to facilitate product production and eliminate product quality problems
Cost
Design components and sub-systems in line with cost targets
Identify and implement cost reduction opportunities
Safety
Ensure that product designs comply with appropriate safety and environmental standards
Ensure that product designs do not present any safety or environmental risk at any stage throughout their life cycle
People
Work with other departments in the organization (e.g. Marketing, Purchasing, Production & After-Sales Service) to ensure the effective implementation of design projects. This includes other parts of the Whirlpool in different locations, particularly in Italy & US.
Work with suppliers and tool makers to ensure that designs are suitable for high volume production.
Other duties and other projects as assigned by the Architecture Engineering Manager.
Minimum requirements
Educational background
Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline
at least 4-6 years of experience in the same or very similar role as electronic or electrical engineering focal point
Technical skills
Familiarity with CAD systems and in using PDM or PLM data management systems
Experience in the design of product systems and electromechanical components
Used to working in an environment of high production volumes
Experience of following design concepts from drawing board through into production.
Understands the key guidelines relating to the design of injection moulded plastic
Knows how to select materials and develop components to ensure adequate codes are met.
Understands process capability and able to use this to ensure that designs can accommodate expected levels of process variation.
Able to work on several projects simultaneously ranging for urgent short-term factory support issues through to the development of longer term product developments.
Able to summarise and present design concepts.
Familiar with the technology in domestic appliances
Understanding of design for 6 Sigma tools and techniques. With knowledge of lean thinking, continuous improvement and associated tools and techniques.
Pro-actively practical and confident to disassemble machines to demonstrate design intent
Soft skills
Open-minded with the ability to generate simple creative solutions.
Good interpersonal and influencing skills and so able to gain the respect of others and their ‘buy in’ for design proposals
Strong motivation and ability to drive things through independently within multifunctional teams and with guidance from the more experienced engineers
Analytical Skills for interpreting data and test reports with attention to detail and a completer finisher
Sense of urgency and capability to work under pressure for multiple tasks are needed requirements, Flexible with the ability to adapt to fast changing priorities and projects
Strong attitude to the problem solving and critical thinking, pro-active behaviour and capability to respect work commitment and deadlines
Willingness to travel to other locations of Whirlpool globally and also suppliers
Language
Fluent English
Additional language knowledge is nice to have – with special focus on the main languages spoken in our key markets (e.g.: Italian, Slovak, Polish, Russian, Turkish)
