  Job Description

  The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is a dynamic agency and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, golf courses, skating rinks, trails, and parkways.

  The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Program Coordinator I - DCR Statewide Initiatives Coordinator located at 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA. Please submit a cover letter and resume as part of the application process.

  GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  The Program Coordinator will serve as a member of DCR's Visitor Engagement and Programming Unit and will assist with the overall coordination and oversight of DCR's Urban Summer Youth Initiative (Summer Nights Program) and other statewide initiatives and trainings to promote engagement and stewardship of DCR and it's properties. The Coordinator will build relationships with DCR Staff, Summer Nights Partners, State and municipal police departments and other entities.

  DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

DCR is a dynamic agency and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, golf courses, skating rinks, trails, and parkways.

  Since 2015, the annual DCR Summer Nights program has provided free, safe youth-based programs for thousands of at-risk teens and young adults in urban areas across the Commonwealth. The program demonstrates commitment to urban youth development, builds community, fosters activities that promote healthy lifestyles and promotes shared stewardship of our parks. In 2023, DCR partnered with 84 organizations provided variety of educational and recreational programs to over 20,000 participants across the state. Programs are held at DCR, municipal and partner facilities.

  This position reports to the Manager of Statewide Initiatives and Programs and will be working a hybrid work schedule (minimum 2-3 days in office/site visits and remaining days remote). Schedule will be flexible as site visits are often conducted during the evening hours. Working some evenings will be required. Agency laptop and cell phone will be provided.

  Duties:

  The Program Coordinator will assist with the overall operations of the Summer Nights program including coordinating regional program schedules, setting up in person and or virtual meetings, handling invoicing from partners, managing daily police details for programs, designing banners and conducting summer night program site visits.

  This position will assist with the preparation of all bid materials for the Summer Nights program and prepare, organize and schedule virtual informational meetings for bid respondents. In addition, the Program Coordinator will update a PowerPoint presentation for the virtual informational meeting.

  Work with DCR Legislative Affairs and Communications on Summer Nights marketing, and notifications to apply for funding. Work with DCR Communications on Social Media efforts to promote the program.Update, record and prepare speaking points and ppt presentation for virtual regional meetings to review Summer Nights program requirements.The Program Coordinator will maintain and update the Urban Summer Youth Initiative database and assist with outreach.Assist with coordination of Summer Nights Kick Off and Celebration Ceremony Events including scouting of sites, designing signage boards, drafting speaking points and compiling program information for event briefings.Purchase Summer Nights materials for kick off event including marketing items. Update, create and distribute Summer Nights Kit Materials to assist partners with managing a successful program. Materials include: payment/ invoicing information, staff contact listing, emergency procedures and reporting documents.Coordinate exclusive fishing and Boston Harbor Island excursion programming opportunities for DCR Summer Night participants. Serve as liaison to Summer Nights partners and will assist them with all aspects of their summer programming including conducting weekly check in calls, site visits and assisting them with the planning and implementation of their program. Collect reports from each partner at the end of the season and draft a final report and presentation highlighting all Summer Nights activities, partners, attendance, feedback and recommendations for improvements to the program.Assist with coordination and staffing of DCR's booth at the BIG E, First Day Hikes, Park Serve Day, and annual Girl Scouts Love State Parks Initiatives as well as any new initiatives that are created.Assist the Visitor Experience Training Coordinator with all logistics including scheduling, material preparation, space reservations for statewide trainings for all DCR full-time employees and seasonal employees.This position may also support other agency initiatives on a needed basis.Site visits may occur 1-3 evenings per week and can be at a variety of locations throughout the commonwealth.

  Qualifications

   First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

  MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, administrative or managerial experience in business administration, business management or public administration the major duties of which involved program management, program administration, program coordination, program planning and/or program analysis, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

  Substitutions:

  I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for the required experience.

  II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major other than in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

  *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
